Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    converting JPG files to BMP format

    Apologies if this has been asked before, but the search engine comes up blank.
    I am trying to convert 3,000 odd jpeg files into bitmap format using the following script:

    Code:
    dim b as b
    path1 = "c:\my databases\bitmaps\photo_jpg\\"
    path2 = "c:\my databases\bitmaps\photo\\"
    jpg_filelist = filefind.get(path1-"*_photo.jpg",0,"n")
    bmp_filelist = *for_each(tag,stritran(tag,".jpg",".bmp"),jpg_filelist)
    countfile    = *count(jpg_filelist)
    FOR x = 1 TO countfile
    	b = file.to_blob(path1-word(jpg_filelist,x,crlf()))
     	  file.from_blob(path2-word(bmp_filelist,x,crlf()),b)
     	  statusbar.set_text(word(jpg_filelist,x,crlf())+ " converted")
    NEXT x
    statusbar.clear()
    the script appears to work, but A5V10 does not see any of the converted bitmap files, neither does Paint Shop Pro. The odd thing is that the operating system does (in my case XP SP3), I can list the files and display the files and all the properties are as I would expect under XP. I can even edit them using Paint! So what am I doing wrong?

    TIA

    p.s.

    I just realised that I had not defined variable B as a blob, so I retried with "DIM B as B" but got the same result.

    Are you just trying to change the file extension of all the files, or to actually change the format from jpg to bmp? I don't see any code that converts the format of the blob variable. See BITMAP_TO_JPEG()

      What does the bmp format do for you that a jpeg doesn't?

        Doh!

        I had the "JPEG_TO_BITMAP" help printout sitting on my desk , getting old, losing my marbles or both, thanks Ira.

        As for your question Al, the finished application will run on my laptop which does not have that much diskspace, so I'm trying to save space by converting the jpegs.

        Going for a lay down in a dark room

        thanks guys

        p.s.

        I should add that my script worked with the "JPEG_TO_BITMAP" function included

          Re: converting JPG files to BMP format

          But aren't bitmap files generally larger than jpg files given the same image?
          There can be only one.

            Or you can use some software like thumbnail to make smaller jpegs....

            Here's one that I use for jobs like this...

              Re: converting JPG files to BMP format

              Thanks Al,

              I will give that a try.

              I nearly got there using A5V10 but cannot see where or if you can set the pixel resolution (in this case I want 72ppi), does anyone know?

              dim bmp as b
              dim jpg as b
              dim fptr as p
              dim saveb as b
              path1 = "c:\my databases\bitmaps\photo_work\\"
              jpg_filelist = filefind.get(path1-"*_photo.jpg",0,"n")
              bmp_filelist = *for_each(tag,stritran(tag,".jpg",".bmp"),jpg_filelist)
              countfile = *count(jpg_filelist)
              FOR x = 1 TO countfile
              jpg = file.to_blob(path1-word(jpg_filelist,x,crlf()))
              bmp = jpeg_to_bitmap(jpg)
              ui_bitmap_create("test",8.889,6.097) 'with a pixel resolution of 72 this usually gives me a bmp of 640 x 439 which is just about right when using UI_SHOW_IMAGE() command
              ui_bitmap_load("ex_jpg",bmp)
              ui_bitmap_draw("test",<<%code%
              bitmap("ex_jpg",0,0,8.889,6.097,"halftone")
              %code%)
              saveb = ui_bitmap_save("test")
              fptr = file.create(path1-ut(word(bmp_filelist,x,crlf())),FILE_RW_EXCLUSIVE)
              fptr.writeb(saveb)
              fptr.close()
              statusbar.set_text(ut(word(jpg_filelist,x,crlf()))+ " converted")
              NEXT x
              statusbar.clear()
              In practice I have found that setting the pixel resolution to 72 and making them all one size, does seem to save a lot of diskspace.
