Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    W7 and Linux Server

am trying to get a client to get a new server using Linux, but since new workstations may have to be W7, wonder if anyone has used a Linux Server with a W7 wk station (using Samba)?

I run a ubuntu server and windows workstations talk to it just fine. It is only a matter of mapping the server drive to the WS

We would have a mix of XP and W7 workstations. Which is what worries me! I guess Balmer and Co have probably made changes to 7 to make it more difficult to use Linux servers.

Have sent an email to Samba tech support - will see what they say.

I wouldn't have it any other way. The sell to me is - My ubuntu server is my file server, my web server, my mail server, has mysql dbs to use ect etc. I have no performace issues and stability has justified the need for no system administrator on site. I get a guy in just to chaeck it out for 1hr a month. He even feels bad charging for the hr. Workout what it costs to do the same on a windows server and you are broke before you start

I only have one client with a non windows server, that is Linux. They use Samba as the go between. It has run flawlessly for over 4 years. And it is appreciably faster than a windows server - but I am not familiar with ubuntu.

Not sure what you are looking for in a server but there are some nice Power Edge 2650 2U servers that are dirt cheap!

We run opensuse linux 11.1 and samba in a mixed network with XP - home and professional and Vista as well as Windows 7 Home and Unlimited. The configuration is complex. Now we logon at domain and use stricly the DNS server.
Once per week I am working here in the office. When I connect to the local net, my laptop find the server and the databases directories within one secend.
Just one issue with "image file reference". When we change the image, the image in the form will not refresh. We know, it is a configuration problem between opensuse and samba - but we can't fix it.

                        Re: W7 and Linux Server

Well, that doesn't bode well. With my one client with Linux and Samba, we have different mapped servers/drives for images and the program. It has worked flawlessly for over 4 years. But I knew once I got my W7 machine, and went through the difficulties of adding it to an existing network with all XP machines, there would be trouble.

Are you saying that you can't find and set an image reference field? Or just that it won't display? Is the server holding the images a mapped drive?

                          No
Or just that it won't display?
It displays the image correct, when we enter a new record.
To change the image reference is the problem. The prior image stays, until you close and start again the application. Then the right image is there.

Is the server holding the images a mapped drive?
Yes. Our server manager explained to me, it is a linux-samba problem. Opensuse linux do not refresh the file pointer on samabs request. Openssuse 9 or 8 worked well - I have forget the version number. But we test out.
It depends not to the workstation operating system.

There might be way, via xbasic, to get the image to refresh.

If you go to a different parent, and then come back to the original, does the correct image show, or do you always have to exit the app, and then reopen to get it to show?

Yes, I founded the xbasic command, but without any success. It worked perfect on windows 2003 server, but not here.

If you go to a different parent, and then come back to the original, does the correct image show, or do you always have to exit the app, and then reopen to get it to show?
                              No - Yes ;-)
No - to change the parent has no effect.
Yes - you have to close the application.

Some times, the first change of the image reference will work correct, but that's it
