Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Display MS Word Documents on a Form

I am a trial lawyer - I need to be able to catalog and display a variety of files collected on a hard disk. I've imported the file names and directory locations into a table. I've been able to call up and display PDF files, but how do I do the same for Microsoft Word and Excel documents? Thanks for your help.

You should be able to select the word document and it should automatically launch Word.

I'm not sure what you mean. I would like to add a field or a supercontrol to my form and be able to display the Word document on my form. I use the PDF viewer to view the PDF files. What do I need to use to display the Word document or an Excel file in the form?

Re: Display MS Word Documents on a Form

I don't believe you can do that; the best Alpha can do (to my knowledge) is launch Word and display the file within that program. I don't believe there are any supercontrols that would do what you want...

Recommend looking up OLE & ACTIVEX and Microsoft Word in the ALPHA HELP file for examples of accessing your Word files. Unable to offer more. Sorry.

              Bruce,

You might want to take a look at this:
              https://www.regnow.com/softsell/nph-...i?item=4459-21

              or this:
              http://www.skysof.com

This product is Word OCX, but it was featured on the documentation for Word Viewer OCX, which I purchased a while back and got it to work with Alpha Five.

              Here's the sales pitch:

Word Viewer OCX is an activeX component which enables your application to easily display and interact with Word (doc) and other types of files include RTF, WRI, WPD, WPS, WPT, MCW, HTML, and text files. It is a great solution for companies wishing to display read-only Word document data to their employees while restricting modifications to the underlying data. With Word Viewer OCX you can also display password protected Word documents without supplying passwords to your users - keep you confidential data safe and secuire. To use simply place the control on your form, set the Path property, and you are all set!

Hopefully, tomorrow I'll post a JING video link. It's not as quick as I'd like, but still much faster than opening WORD. And I've got to tell you finding this was not easy. The link says the price is 49.95.

With the activeX components that comes from Microsoft (and visible to Alpha) I am able to use CSV and RTF and place them on a form.....but the .XLS fails on the former and cannot even find something to try for the .DOC yet.

looks like you need to find out if either will read the new docx document - documentation doesn't mention docx, only doc

Just start Word as a server and when needed, pass the name to Word, let Word open the document and make Word visible. There are enough examples on the forum.
