Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

News and Update Window not working correctly

When I start up the Alpha IDE, the News and Update window that comes up seems to be stuck on an old web page and will not update itself. How can I clear it out?

More detail: Back in the February training class in Burlington, we logged in from the class room (or hotel room) in the hotel and the News and Update window brought up the Hilton Garden Inn website, from which we had to have a passcode to get out of the hotel's firewall to the Internet.

Now from home, I get an Internet Explorer Script Error dialog which says that "ddtabmenu" is undefined, enter Yes or No to continue running scripts. No matter what option I choose, the same Hilton webpage from the hotel trys to come up in the News and Updates window, and of course it doesn't work correctly (because I'm no longer at the Hilton and not behind that firewall).

So the News and Update window has not worked since that training class. It's a relatively trivial problem - it doesn't prevent me from using the IDE, but I'm finally getting tired of seeing the error come up. :) How can I fix this issue.

    Thank you.
    Lou

I had the same problem on the laptop I used to teach the course. I deleted the news.html file from my cached data and it was replaced by the one in the Alpha program directory, which got rid of the primary error, but I never restored the update functionality.

I showed the problem to Selwyn and Lenny and I think we're close to fixing it for the next release.

I have not seen or attempted to troubleshoot the problem that you are reporting. However, I do believe that Alpha5 uses settings from Internet Explorer. KB 318378 discusses the steps needed to reset Internet Explorer settings back to default. The steps are listed under the heading of Method 1. In your case I would follow the Method 1 steps to determine if it helps in resolving your issue.

If the Method 1 steps do not resolve your issue, you may try the other methods, but I would wait to hear back from Martin before proceeding with the other methods.

The IE settings are not the problem.

I look forward to that release.

See my thumbnail for what I've got.

Or do I need to re-install?

Keith, your problem is the same as mine; just a different web page is stuck in the window. Since this problem has come up for a few different people, I'm sure it will be addressed shortly.

Hi Lou, I had the same problem and reinstalled the latest update and it cleared it. Don't know if that was what to do but it worked for me. Remember we installed the latest patch at the conference; I'm currently using 2814-3539.

Hi Fred! How are you doing? :)

I am on the same release as you, 2814 - 3539, and in fact I've installed two updates since the class, but it has not cleared the problem. I had been using the latest production level build (not any beta builds) that was current at the time of that class.

Hi Lou, I'm doing great. We should share a call some time.
It was hard getting rid of this screen and I may have uninstalled and then reinstalled. Anyhow it's gone for me.
