Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    How to move Entire Project

    Hello

I currently have a network share to hold my database files and all my web forms. If I want to take a copy home on my laptop how can I import them to my local hard drive? I see there is a way to zip the database files for importing but what about the forms? And will the forms still work with the database even though the forms are expecting the database to be in a specific location ??

    Thanks

    Dave

Re: How to move Entire Project

    First, welcome to the board.

Second, this is an extremely easy task IF you have all tables in one folder - just copy all the files to the new computer/folder.

If you have put tables in multiple folders, (a) try not to do it again, (b) you will probably need to duplicate the folder path on the second computer. (You can work around that but it takes time and effort to "genericize" the app.)

Also, if you MUST use other folders to store anything - tables, photos, PDF docs, etc. - it works best if you can make them subfolders of your main application folder. That way you can easily use a relative naming method to find it; for example, A5.Get_Path() + "\PDF_FolderName\MyDoc.PDF".

As for Alpha5 on your laptop - install A5 from the install program. Do not just copy the files. (You can do it by copying but then you need to register about 6 files with Windows. It's easier to just load it onto your laptop with the install routine.)

And, by "application folder" I mean "where your application files are" and not "where Alpha5.exe is located." If you only have one application to work with you can put the application files in with the Alpha Five program itself but I really, really don't recommend it. For those of use who have multiple different applications, putting them all in with the Alpha5 program files would be a nightmare.

Re: How to move Entire Project

Hi Please can you help with multiple folders. I don't know how I did it but I have files in multiple folders as seen when viewing my table/sets list. This is my first app and as a result I have many tables, forms, browses etc which are not required. I tried to copy the entire database and then delete/move the required files. The problem is the sets. If I move a file the set doesn't work. I would like to keep the original jumbled app (for experimenting) and make a new tidy app. Any advice please? I think if I delete and re-do a set, I will loose my browses/forms layouts. The main form took hours.

As long as you have a backup of all the directories in which your app resides, you could try the following: copy the contents of all directories into one folder. Go into edit sets and delete the child elements and after deleting, reattatch the child tables which will now reside in the one single directory. It sounds like some external paths were hardcoded into the set definition. If you have to completely reconstruct a set, you can always copy a form from your original backed up application.

            Just to clarify John's comment:

The only reason you should need to completely reconstruct a set is if the PARENT table of the set is located in a sub-folder.

It is entirely possible (though I see no reason to do it) to create a "set" that contains nothing more than one parent table with no child tables. I make that point only to show that you can delete all the child tables in a set then add tables from a different folder back in. Of course, those tables should have the same name so that the field references still work; otherwise you will have to spend a good amount of time resetting the field references on each 'unlinked' field object.

Another reason is this: Some of my clients wish to design their own reports.I create some of these single table sets for them to use for their report design. Then when I make a change to the table's data dictionary.I can simply replace the table's dictionary tables on their system without affecting their reports.

Thanks for the help. I copied the files from the original into the new common folder and then used 'Repair set' to redirect the set to the files in the common folder. All working now. Thanks.
