Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    optional variables in User Defined Function - UDF

    I got one hit with search for "optional variable". Didn't help.
    I'm trying to add an optional variable to a UDF. I tried the format that is shown for standard system functions shown in red, but no joy. Can you do this for UDF's and if so how? Thanks

    Code:
    FUNCTION dlg_alert_box AS V (input_msg as C, box_pos as C [COLOR="Red"][,open_time as n][/COLOR])

    'if "open_time" !$ variables_enum(local_variables())
    	dim open_time as n=2.2
    'end if

    dim dlg_body as C
    dim mdlg as C="ENTRY ERROR"
    vlen=len(alltrim(input_msg))+8
    box_pos=left(box_pos,1)+","+word(box_pos,2,"-")
    input_msg=space(5)+input_msg

    z1=<<%dg1%
    {position=%dg1%

    z2=<<%dg2%
    }{background=yellow}{font=arial,10,b}{nocaption}
    {lf};
    {region}
    {text=%dg2%

    z3=<<%dg3%
    ,1input_msg}
    {lf};
    {endregion};
    %dg3%

    ui_beep(UI_ASTERISK_BEEP)

    dlgF=z1+box_pos+z2+vlen+z3
    'msgbox(dlgF)
    ui_modeless_dlg_box(mdlg,dlgF)

    xbasic_wait_for_idle()
    sleep(open_time)
    ui_modeless_dlg_close(mdlg)

    END FUNCTION
    Code:
    dlg_alert_box("You are not authorized to edit this document","6-2")

      Hard to find in the help but it appears in this section.

      If you open_time = 0 I don't think you need the as N.

        Thanks Al, and Stan. Stan, from where did you get that page? I couldn't find it to begin with, and now even knowing it exists, I can't find it in the Help files. Where did it come from and how did you get it? It's not under User Defined Functions!

          Stan's link (appears in this section) points to the online help file. Then click show all to see the index on the left..

            Screenshot of search. Also found searching for optional parameter.

              Al,
              I get that, but that is working BACKWARDS from the end. I want to know how he got that page beginning with opening the Help files and moving FORWARD to get to the page he referenced in his link. Again, it is not accessible from the listed topics under User Defined Function index list. He got there somehow. My question is how, so I can find it in the future when needed.

              LATER.
              Thank's Stan...
              OK, I see.... The User Defined Function link in the SEARCH tab is different than the User Defined Function in the Index tab. Gee... that's clear and intuitive. I thought they were always the same. Doppy me. ( I can't get to the Web Help files. It locks up my IE).
