Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Can't edit Field Rules

I have ver 10, 2814-3539. I am a newbie and am trying to build a contact manager program. I believe the error probably lies with me, but not sure how to correct it. I have 12 tables and 3 sets in the database and am unable to edit the field rules on any of the tables. I have tried other databases (Alpha Sports for one) and have no problem. the message I get is "The table/set is being used by another user or in another session and could not be opened in exclusive mode. Field rules can be viewed but no changes can be saved." Any suggestions?

1st questions is anyone else accessing the database? If they are, have them close it.

Else, your computer may have the files locked. Restart windows and try again.

Thanks for the advice. Rebooting windows did solve the problem.

        Newbie here,

"re: table/set is being used by another user or in another session.."

i am experiencing the same problem. I need to exit Alpha and restart.. Using Windows 7 ultimate.. Why is this happening? Is Alpha keeping the files opened? What can be done to prevent this?

All files are closed... I am a newbie evaluating Alpha and concerned when I place on a server.

        Any assistance is greatly appreciated.

Lar it's likely you're responsible (unknowingly) for the issue. Unwanted open instances of tables in the database gets discussed over and over. It's not clear what we can tell you that would help that hasn't already been said. A search of the message board is indicated.

          Here are several common situations:

          a) When an ordinary form is opened every table supporting that table is opened and stays opened until the form closes. Could you have open forms ?

          b) When a custom script that you write opens a table, and then crashes... (I do this a lot). The table will remain open. Did you crash any scripts ?

          c) There's a special case for forms "opened as dialogs". Simply closing the window will NOT close the form. It remains in memory. Since it's still "open" in memory so are its supporting tables. Are you opening any forms "as dialogs" ?

          d) Are you doing development work on a shared copy of the database? If so, others may be opening instances of the tables from their workstations. Might that be the case for you? If so, the recommended approach is to do your development work (and experimentation) on a dummy (throw away) copy of the database, that is not shared with others over your network.

Discovering why the tables are left open is fundamental. To assist during development you might want to use the

          a5_forceclosetables() function

from the Interactive window. This would not be something you'd use as a matter of course in a finished application.

I hope these ideas help. If you have more questions on this furnish more details, or even better a sample database for us to review. The message board supports uploading zip file attachments so take advantage of it.

            Tom,

Thanks very much for the reply. Exactly what I am looking for..

No, did not crash any scripts.. I knew tables were left opened when I closed the form. But unfamiliar with Alpha.. You really helped me.

            Thanks!
