Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Membership Database

I'm a new user and I am still learning this software.
I would like to build a database for members.

I have managed to build the tables for membership registration and a table for the members listings and also a table that admin can use to add or edit members.

How do I bring all this together in V10 so that it can function properly?

And get it on the web.

Also how do I launch the database on the internet?

Thanks for this great software package.

    Re: Membership Database

Are you saying you have built three tables for this? In reality You need only one for the lot - You add/edit/delete from this. If you are going to mulitple transaction with the members like attendance, multi membership types you then create to suit. These are normaly all linked as a 'set' by a unique ID field. Such fields must be the same type and size. To learn Alpha I created a basic client database that may help you. If you go to http://www.onestopsolutions.biz/mc1 it can be downloaded from there. To get to the control panel when you start is simply a matter of using A5 default override - eg: hold the shift,Ctrl and alt keys while opening

There are also some great sample DB with Alpha that you can see

      Thanks for the link.

I was under the impression you need more than one table because of the admin level where only approved administrators can make changes to the database. ie list of members.

Once I have it completed I would like it to be on the web because our members are all over the RSA and travel a lot. Around 80% of our members sign up via the internet.

The great thing about Alpha is its ability to take what you are building on the desktop and then create a web version using the same tables (DBF, Access, whatever you used). You need to have an application server license, but while you are learning you can do development based on the localhost.

I did some playing with this a while back but as I am not yet in need to move to the web, it was all play. I found that within 48 hours I had interactive web pages developed with security talking to my tables so to that end I was impressed. My own laptop was the webserver!

Now that I have completed my current project I will be moving some of it to be accessed via the web - can't wait for the challenge it presents. Good luck with your project

addendum - my web stats show quite a lot of people have downloaded the program. I would be interested if anyone had install issues as I used a third party installer. Any feedback private or otherwise on would all help me to learn

And it would be best to get help more expediently to place this thread in the web side of the message board. This is the desktop side.

Not sure what you mean - That would apply if it was a web based question??

                Hi Mark,
And get it on the web.

Also how do I launch the database on the internet?
That was also part of Christo's question.

To me this is one of the hardest parts in deploying an application on the web, as most ISP's will not have the Alpha Server on their system along with PHP .net and all the rest. So now you will have to hunt around and find one, or get your own dedicated server and learn how to manage that.

                  Re: Membership Database

It is clear that A5 is a powerfull package as I gather from the comments and other information on the forum and web.

                  Thanks for the response.
