Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    line numbering on report problem

    Hi all,

    I search how to have the item line numbering on the report and tried it many times but the result is not correct.

    I have a report and filter the records and show the Total of each line
    with this expressiong

    total(G1invoice_Items->Extension,GRP->g1invoice header)

    it works and can sum the total for each invoice.
    Invoice number total
    001 500
    030 450
    035 1200

    but I want to have the line items number for each line like this

    LineNumber invoice number total
    1 001 500
    2 030 450
    3 035 1200

    what I try is I drag the calculate field on report and use this expression
    count(G1invoice_Items->Extension,GRP->g1invoice header)

    The result of LineNumber displays 1 only , not 1 , 2, 3, 4, so on for each line

    What I miss and have to change the expression for this

    Thanks
    Peter-th

    Re: line numbering on report problem

    Hi Peter,

    Is this line number you want on the report, just for when you print the report or should this be a value in a field for the child table?

      Re: line numbering on report problem

      It is my interpretation that the problem you are dealing with is that a calc field is basically working on the fields on a record and therefore can't see the records above or below

      What you are trying to do is sequentially number the rows of records in your report. Is this correct? If so then you really need to probably create a numeric field an when the report is about run, you run a script the numbers the records. This can be reasonably easy

        Re: line numbering on report problem

        The calculated field expression for the Alphasport invoice report which has the child invoice items table as the current(2) table is:
        Code:
        Line_num = iif(table.current(2).eof(),run_count([COLOR="Red"]Invoice_items->Product_id[/COLOR])+1,run_count([COLOR="red"]Invoice_items->Product_id[/COLOR]))
        Change what is in red to your table and field names and you should have it.

          Re: line numbering on report problem

          This is a great calculated field providing that each Invoice is called for one at a time.

          If you wanted to print a batch of Invoices then every line will be numbered sequentially, not a good idea.

          The other aspect to consider is, if a customer ever raised a query on an Invoice they received and referred to a particular line number, where would the user go to look at the Invoice, the form which does not have line numbers, or the report which now has to be Previewed/Printed for the user to get the same info to hand?

          I would suggest looking at Row Numbering in Learn Alpha.

            Re: line numbering on report problem

            Hi Keith,

            I want to print the report for a customer who has many invoices for each month so I print the report for him to let him know how many invoices he bought and has details for each invoice ; invoice no. ,date, total. For example he has 10 invoices for this month so
            I print the report for him and it has 10 lines for each invoice and
            I want to have the numbering line number for each invoice
            number invoice # date total
            1
            2
            3
            4
            5
            .
            .
            10

            I can do the report but only the numbering the line number for each line of each invoice.
            I want only just for print report not for chile table

            Thanks

                    Mike,

                    Line_num = iif(table.current(2).eof(),run_count(Invoice_items->Product_id)+1,run_count(Invoice_items->Product_id))

                    The above expression works great for me but may I know what does it means for the
                    table.current(2).eof
                    eof = end of file ?
                    (2) = ?

                    and why you use iif() instread of if()

                    Thanks
