Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Import for RT ?

    Hi Guys,

    I have built an application for my customer for him to carry on using his existing data from an old access database.

    As I only needed two of the tables I created buttons to do the import.

    This was built in my developer version and has now been installed as a RT application.

    When the Import button is pressed, he gets a message on the RT machine that says the full version of Alpha must be installed to do the Import.

    My question is, how do I put an Import routine onto the RunTime machine for the end user, to import records from a table that would have to be browsed to?

    Message seems strange. Can't see why an import operation wouldn't run.

    Have you tried converting it to xbasic?

      Hi Stan,

      This was all done with AS and I have just got back from the client, so I have not done any changes yet.

      By changing to XB, what further would I need to change to allow this to work on the RT?

      XB conversion:

      'Create new 'Import records' operation for current table or set.
      operation_startup("import records","",.t.)

        Since you have the table structure set, I would define an import operation to import to the existing table from whatever form the data is presently and save it. Then convert it to xbasic and modify it to accept the user location selection.

        The xbasic to import the Northwind customers table in the Northwind Alphasports sample to an existing customers2 table in AlphaSports is

        Code:
        dim connectionString as c
        connectionString = "{A5API=Access,FileName='C:\Program Files\A5V8\MDBFiles\Northwind.mdb',UserName='Admin'}"

        delete options
        dim options as p
        options.ConsolidateArguments= .t.
        options.AddTablesToDatabase= .t.
        options.ShowProgress= .t.
        options.AllowCancel= .t.

        delete a_import
        dim a_import[0] as p

        a_import[].ObjectName = "Customers"
        a_import[..].SQLSelectStatement = "SELECT * FROM Customers"
        a_import[..].SQLType = "Portable"
        a_import[..].Arguments = ""
        a_import[..].ImportType = "Append to existing table"
        a_import[..].AppendOption = "Append all"
        a_import[..].AppendToTableName = a5.get_path() + chr(92) + "customers2"+".dbf"
        a_import[..].AppendFieldMap = ""

        dim flagSilent as l
        flagSilent = .t.
        delete p
        dim p as p
        p = a5_AlphaDAO_Import(connectionString,a_import,options,flagSilent)
        The modification necessary to allow a user to run this and locate the mdb for themselves is

        Code:
        [COLOR="Red"]loc = ui_get_file("Select","Locate the .mdb to be imported.")
        if loc = ""
        end
        end if[/COLOR]

        dim connectionString as c
        [COLOR="red"]connectionString = "{A5API=Access,FileName='"+var->loc+"',UserName='Admin'}" [/COLOR]

        delete options
        dim options as p
        options.ConsolidateArguments= .t.
        options.AddTablesToDatabase= .t.
        options.ShowProgress= .t.
        options.AllowCancel= .t.

        delete a_import
        dim a_import[0] as p

        a_import[].ObjectName = "Customers"
        a_import[..].SQLSelectStatement = "SELECT * FROM Customers"
        a_import[..].SQLType = "Portable"
        a_import[..].Arguments = ""
        a_import[..].ImportType = "Append to existing table"
        a_import[..].AppendOption = "Append all"
        a_import[..].AppendToTableName = a5.get_path() + chr(92) + "customers2"+".dbf"
        a_import[..].AppendFieldMap = ""

        dim flagSilent as l
        flagSilent = .t.
        delete p
        dim p as p
        p = a5_AlphaDAO_Import(connectionString,a_import,options,flagSilent)
        operation_startup("import records","",.t.)
        What were you thinking???? The documentation specifically states
        Note : This function is not available in the Alpha Five Runtime.

          You mean I have to read that as well!!!!!

          Will this script allow me to map to desired fields?

          As always, many thanks for your help.

            Re: Import for RT ?

            You just take the xbasic of the defined operation and modify it to allow the user to navigate to the mdb. If you map the fields in the operation they will be mapped in the xbasic.
