Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Re: Filter from Alphabet Button

    Hi Guys,

Here is an update using the Alphabet button.

When a Letter is pressed, that creates a current selection, providing the report/letter/label is based on the same table/set then the layout to be printed can be filtered using the Current Selected records. Any other filter would have to be set into the layout

    See thumbnail for filter dialog.

    Re: Filter from Alphabet Button

Ends up that Keith is using the v10 alphabet supercontrol which oddly does not directly expose the variables being used. The current_filter_expn value which was able to be seen should be able to be used but was hard to do and see remotely.

He had already started an alternative course to filter by choosing a beginning letter and an ending letter which the Lastname field's value must have its first letter between. I have set up a filter which should work for that....he will let us know how he gets on.

This filter's objective is to select a "card" to be sent to various people.

    Re: Filter from Alphabet Button

Making a choice with the Alphabet Button on the AlphaSports Customer Information sets a variable VAR->vcLetter, currently dimmed as shared. If you make it a global variable you can reference it in the report filter.

You could as Mike indicates, add code to the onchange event for the button to declare some other variable global and assign the chosen letter to that variable.

    dim shared vcLetter as C
    dim global choice as C
    choice = var->vcLetter

    Re: Filter from Alphabet Button

Keith I think you must choose. Do you want to base the report on the currently selected records, or do you want to query the tables in the report itself? If the report is based on a different set than the form the first choice isn't available, of course. Maybe you should tell us more about the form and report? Even better post a sample data and the report and form layouts.

    Re: Filter from Alphabet Button

More than likely the variable is only dimmed shared at most so first thing would be either to make it global or set a separate global variable (my choice) to equal the "searchby" variable when it is being set on the button push. Then an easy matter to use the value of the global variable for the report.

    Filter from Alphabet Button

    Hi All,

I have the Alphabet button on a form.

I select a letter and the browse filters on that letter, great.

How do I use that selection in a filter for a report with a start and end date?

Extra info, Names in one table, dates in other, linked 1:1.
