Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Cannot get the ASW pages to work online

I'm new to all of this, to be sure. Although I have the start of a nifty workable database to work on my computer, I cannot get anything other than html pages to work online. And I've tried ftp, Frontpage and finally the internal ftp publishing faculty in alpha five to publish my grids, tables and ASW pages on my own web site http://www.alphapro.com/alphafive/index.html

I've produced several tables along with forms and browses that seem to work well on my notebook, and then I've constructed the grids based on the tables for the web project. The grids tested out okay in Live Preview. THen I created the ASW pages in which I inserted the grids. Lastly I published the whole thing in a directory on my computer, then created a new profile which I used to launch the resulting files to my web site. But on the ASW pages I'm getting standardized instructional pages and not what I created with the grids.

Perhaps my web site plan with hostgator does not support ASW or I didn't get all the bells and whistles I need to reproduce my output onto a web site?

    Jack,
A5w pages only work with the Alpha application server.

So I take it when I bought alpha five developer for around 150 bucks I did not buy the complete package? That is I can build excellent databases for my home computer, I cannot DEPLOY these databases on the web so that others can pull what I build on their browsers and view what I have produced. That is I need to spend additional bucks to get the application server software for DEPLOYMENT. Meanwhile I can build web applications and they will even test out okay until I try putting them on my web site?

Yup. Or find a hosting company that supports Alpha.

Jon, all the promotional materials are clear about the need for an Application Server license to deploy Alpha web applications and/or a Runtime license to deploy Alpha desktop applications.

If you are unhappy, we offer a 30-day money-back guarantee on everything we sell.

I am happy with the program just as I was when I bought Alpha Four many years ago, and to be honest I did not read the promotional material carefully enough. The database I have developed and am now expanding works like a champ. Being able to publish it on my web site is a plus only if "certain people" choose to use it. And since I felt the odds of this happening were significantly less than 50 % my ability to publish the database or not publish it on my site is likely to be moot anyway. I'm relieved that the problem is not due to me as 1. I had spent a lot of time trying to get it to work online and 2. Was prepared to spend still a lot more time. I can now go onto other projects or even fine tuning the database I already have set up on my computer.
