Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Lookup form - Enter record

    Still newbie here.

I defined a lookup for custid field in Field Rules.. I selected a table to pop-up, but what I really need is a record set.

If a user decides to enter in a new customer, he can select it by choosing <Enter> off the lookup form. What I need is additional fields as (pre)defined in a record set.

Can anyone enlighten me what my options are? I really like the look and feel Alpha utilizes here.

Any information on this will be greatly appreciated.

At first I thought you were talking about the desktop. Now, I wonder if it's the web? Lar, it's not your fault. When there is one forum for a potpourri of forums, whew!

Re: Lookup form - Enter record

        Thanks.. Desktop.. Still newbie here.

        My scenario is the following:
I have 3 departments - Domestic, International and Accounting.

A single customer has data such as different contacts, phone numbers, emails, addresses, etc. for each dept (we have 3 depts). One debtor_number (Link field) ties em' all together.

So I have broken down my tables as
        Cust_Main (Name of Customer - Debtor_Number, etc.)
        Cust_Dom - their particular info.
        Cust_Intl etc.
        Cust_Accting etc.

When the domestic dept. enters in a new quotation (they will utilize the lookup function as specified in field rules.) on a field in the quotation form.

They will click on the Debtor_Number field, lookup form pops-up and they see the customer is not listed. They click <enter> on top to enter in a customer into a new form.

The form that pops-up is based on a single table (Cust_Main) and cannot enter in data for Domestic (phone, etc.)

My problem is simple. The lookup is based on one table... so what I need is a lookup form based on a query. (used to thinking in terms of Access and other dbs where forms are based on queries/or linked tables)... What does one do in such a situation in Alpha? The lookup function is perfect for this sort of thing.

        Any advice is greatly appreciated.

You have three tables for types of customers?

          Cust_Dom - their particular info.
          Cust_Intl etc.
          Cust_Accting etc.
What happens if you decide to add another customer type? Do you re-do your whole database design?

I think database normalization suggests that you have one table for this level of customer detail information with a field that denotes the customer type. With that in place you can filter the lookup on the customer type if you wish.
          There can be only one.
