Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    mode change

I have an application where there is a look up field followed by a browse of the items. This file is in a set linked to another file. The second file has fields on the form which come up under the browse. The first time through it adds the linked record fine. However, when the same record is recalled it shows the data as expected, but if any change is made to the second file's fields alphs5 goes into add mode again and will add a duplicate with the linked fields. I only want a one to one relationship between the files, no duplicates. The set was made with a one to one relationship. Hope someone can help. Thanks.

    Hi Don,

A word to the wise, I notice that you have several posts but never an end conclusion and only once could I find a thanks.

Not only is it helpful to those who have supplied an answer, but also those following behind you and doing a search will get to learn what works in a similar situation.

      Re: mode change

Untangling a multi-step data entry / lookup sequence is practically impossible without a copy of the app to work with. How about zipping a copy and posting it here with a text file containing instructions for us to follow (keystroke by mouse click) to see the problem on our own machines?

        Hi Tom,

Yes I thought I would probably have to do that. I am trying to put together a small application to post. Thanks for the reply (I didn't want to upset Keith again, just didn't post a lot of replys because I don't want to waste anyone's time reading. I know I don't have a lot of time to waste, but, oh well).

Here is the application. The instructions for making this happen are in the readme.txt. Thanks in advance to everyone.

I'm using build 2890_3545 on an XP SP3 box. I'm not able to trigger the error when I follow your steps. I'm able to change the quantity field without difficulty or upset.

Thanks Tom. The only difference is I'm using build 3539. That is the last update on the Alpha page. Where did you get 3545? And when you pick the first item in the list, hit return, and change the quantity field it dosen't show add mode in the lower left corner? Wow, I don't know why that is.

                Re: mode change

Sorry, I think that I tested it with a beta build. But, yes, the mode of the form goes to "change", not "enter".

                  Tom,

Thanks again for your help. The only difference I can find between your set up and mine is the Alpha5 version. I am using Windows XP sp3, etc. I am desperate because my customer is beating me up on this. I am willing to try the beta version. Do you know how I could get a run time beta that you are running?

                    Hi Don,

I have not heard of a Beta Runtime. There is the V10.5 build which is available free if V10 is already installed.

                    V10.5 is available from here.

PS, It takes more that peoples lack of manners to upset me. :)

                      Re: mode change

Don, I rolled back to build 2814_3539 and see the problem you are reporting.

Since your form does not permit edits to the parent table in your one-to-one set, I built a new form based on the Receiving table only. Unzip and extract the files from the attachment to an empty folder.

Using my new form I made these changes:

                      a) the form is based on one table, Receiving
                      b) The on_depart event of the listbox is disabled
                      c) A new button was added - OnPush navigates to the desired record

I'm not authorized to release private beta's. Sorry.

Don, for someone with a "desperate" customer your silence now is puzzling.

                          Hi Tom,

Sorry I haven't been back. I have been rewritting the problem areas of the application for that customer and juggling another customer at the same time.
Your example was much appreciated. Hopefully everything will work when they start "pounding" on it. Thanks again.

Thanks Keith for the link to the beta modules too.

                          Don
