Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Browse based on a set

    I want to open a browse that shows only the parent table, but I want it to have a calulated field showing a total that if the parent item has many subitems it totals those items, if the parent item does not have any sub items it shows the total field in the parent table.

    I believe I can only do this using a set. problems is that the browse shows all parent items plus if the additional records if there are sub items.

    Is there a way I can get a browse view to be only on the parent table with calculated fields that total as above?

    That's the description of the default browse for a set. If you create and save your own browse you get to select what fields from whatever tables in the set you like.
    There can be only one.

      You should be able to do this using only the parent/one table and a properly constructed calc expression.

      I would make sure that there is an index in the table that contains the subitems. Then use the exist() function within an if statement to test if there is a parent key value in the subitems table. If there is use tablesum() or dbsum() and if there is not then use the field in the parent table

        Thanks Tim,

        I am getting there but I can't seem to get the result to count to effectively count the subitems qty that matches the parent item. The total always seems to be the full total of all subitems. I created an index in teh sub table which was based on a filter to be only those records where the status = 1

        Now I want to to the browse to give me a total from the sub table where they match teh specific ID of the parent

        So far I have taken what you have and created a calc field like:

        if(exist(ID,"Sernos","ID"),dbsum("Sernos","Sernos-index","ID","QTY"),QTY)

        This calc does as you say accept it does not give me a total based on only the row in the parent unless it does not exist.

        I have tried variations with tablesum() and get teh same result. I believe the issue relates to being able to match the ID fields in both tables within the calc

          Since you are checking for a value in the "ID" index in the exist() function you should use the same index in the dbsum(). Try

          Code:
          if(exist(ID,"Sernos","ID"),dbsum("Sernos","ID",ID,"QTY"),QTY)

            Thanks Tim,

            I left this one for a couple of days to get my head around it. Your solution worked fine, my problem ended up being in the way I created the index. Thanks
