Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Creating Field Rules in XBasic

    i see where i can create/change the easy ones...

    how/where do i get information to access the properties of a lookup field rule?

    i want to require that "field1" exist in table 2 and then use table2 to put a value into "field2".

    i've got this so far:
    +++++++++++++++++
    dim tbl as P
    dim fr as P
    tbl = table.open("TrashPmt")
    fr = tbl.rules_get()
    ? fr
    V Change_Begin() 'Begin changes to the field rules.
    V Change_End([L Commit]) 'End changes to the field rules.
    Field_Rule_Get as P(fieldName as c[,variableFrame as p]) 'Get (or add) a rule for a field - includes variables of calc fields.
    +PMTAMT.
    +TIXNUM.
    '+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
    Field_Rule_Get as P(fieldName as c[,variableFrame as p]) 'Get (or add) a rule for a field - includes variables of calc fields.
    '+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
    ?fr.field_rule_get("TixNum")
    +Cross_File.
    +Lookup.
    +Required.
    +Unique.
    +Validation.
    '+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
    ?fr.tixnum.lookup.Type
    ?fr.tixnum.lookup.class()
    = "Rule.Lookup"
    ?fr.tixnum.Unique.class()
    = "Rule.Unique"
    ?fr.tixnum.Cross_File.Type
    = "None"
    ?fr.tixnum.Validation.List.class()
    = "Rule.Validation.List"
    '+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

    i think the appropriate question is:
    how do i get access to the "Rule.Lookup" class?

    I believe the table lookup field rule is essentially a black box, the inner workings of which have not been exposed for us.

    Instead of trying to modify the built in lookup, why not build your own?

      i'm willing to build my own; in fact that was what i was starting to do but didn't know what "object values" i needed to "set"...

      in other words, keep talking - i'm listening attentively!!!

        Ok. First, write down the specific sequence you'd want Alpha Five to follow, using the smallest possible steps. When I do this I try to think of the specific steps I'd have to take to do it by hand. Let us see what you come up with. We'll offer suggestions. Don't worry about "how" to do it. Concentrate on "what" needs to be done.

        Then think carefully about the context in which the desired sequence should run. We need to find the right "event" to trigger the script. Might be as simple as a button push, but it may be something you'd want to happen automatically. Don't know yet.

          after 2 hours of documenting, i realized that it didn't matter because i'd have to define/create a custom browse toolbar which would post the contents of this "trash" file and the custom toolbar i am building for another process does not like to post the data on the browse. that's another topic i'll post shortly after i get it documented sufficiently.

          so, long story made short - i'll have to have a permanent table. and it'll have permanent (manually entered) field rules..

          thanks anyway..............
