Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Corrupted Database

I bought Alpha Five one week ago. But it is just not possible to work with it, because of so many mistakes, erors and crashes.

I created a simple database with 2 tables, one set and one form.
As soon as I choose "Database Compact", the whole database is corrupted, always giving the following error message: error loading xxx .... unable to find or open memo file. This happens with tables, sets. Forms just disappear.

After that, I can not use the database anymore, everything is destroyed. When I want to open a table, Alpha Five shuts down completely without giving any error message,

I tried it now with 5 dfferent to check and find out the problem myself, but every time the same thing happens again. After being corrupted, one can find in the file folder many files with strange type endings like: keyword_a.$$M, keyword_b.$$M.
I repaired Alpha Five over the installation routine - the same problem. I uninstalled Alpha Five and did a registry clean before I installed the software new - but I have still the same problems. I tried to build up my own database now three times, they all got corrupted. I am really afraid now to buld an application.

I wrote a mail to alpha software. This is the answer: "This is very strange. I have to say I have not heard of anyone having corruption like this. It sounds like it's looking for the memo file but can't find it. Does this even happen with the AlphaSports database? Is ther another system you can load this on to test with?"

After this reply, I bought yesterday a completely new PC with Windows 7 for 1000 $, I installed AlphaFive on that new one, and created AlphaSports from Template.

I didn't change anything, only exit the application to make a database compact. The following mistakes appeared immediately:

    Could not update vendor
    Could not update pdflist
    Could not update Table pdflist

I deleted the whole database and created AlphaSports a second time: I did 2 very small changes:
    1. I added a field to the customer table
    2. I opened the form Invoice and added a new item to an invoice.

After that I did a Database compact. The following mistakes appear: Could not update invoice

When opening the invoice form this message shows up:
Error loading c:\users\...\alphasports\invoice.set. Unable to find or open memo file (message shows up 2 times).

I made another database compact and the following message appears: Could not update the table help

The strange thing is, that the mistakes are not logical. I created AlphaSports now about 6 times completely new, and the problems are always in a different table or form.

I am working with a PC in German (different date-formats than US) - could this be a problem?

    Thanks for your suggestions.

    Re: Corrupted Database

I am confused as to why the first thing you're doing is to compact the database.

V10 works fine with German localization. The only thing I can think of is that you may have installed in a directory whose name contains "funny" characters. You might have to download the current release candidate, which fixes that problem, if that's the case.

Please submit a bug report with full information from the help menu of your IDE. This is not the sort of problem that can be solved by guesswork: we'll need to be able to reproduce the problem at Alpha.

      Re: Corrupted Database

Thanks for your message, but the problem is solved now.

      The problem is Kaspersky 2010

The answer is in this Forum with a threat of May 23rd, explaining the same problems as I describe here on May 20th.

To solve the problem, please have a look at:

        Re: Corrupted Database

        Frido,
First, welcome to this messageboard! Most answers, especially concerning the desktop will be found here along with many samples to aid you that have been given by other users who frequent the board.

        Regarding
But it is just not possible to work with it, because of so many mistakes, erors and crashes
you will find, as you just did, that most times it is user error that causes many of the issues with Alpha and that with experience these tend to become less and less.

I remember very well how easily Alpha seemed to crash and corrupt my initial applications, but as I learned the nuances of Alpha these issues have pretty much been laid to the wayside....very rare now to have such catastrophic problems. Best way to avoid the aggrevation of having to completely redo something is to BACKUP a lot....and I mean A LOT!!! While I was at my worst in coding, I would back up as much as every 15 minutes when changing a bunch of things....now I don't seem to have to much at all....by doing so, as much of a headache it was to do, it overall saved me hours of redoing work and ALL of my hair (yeah--still have mine!! :) ).

Keep plugging away and things will get better....and more importantly have fun!!
        Mike
