Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Take a look and give feedback?

These are just pictures of the new version of a MAIN work screen I wish to upgrade my users to. There are many forms and more conditional objects, but this is representative. I had a couple art people look at it and they liked it. DO YOU??

    Dave,

You have very busy forms. There's a lot there. Simple is always better, but I can see where in a situation like yours they may need to be like that. I always feel in my own work, I have not mastered the art of simplification even remotely. My only suggestion would be to leave slightly more space verically between fields, so that you don't get that double black line effect. Similarly, a couple of fields might benefit from a slighly greater height as some of the numbers seem cramped. But you know your busieness.

      Dave,

I would agree with Peter, the form is busy. You have put a lot of time and energy into what you have created. Maybe try alternating the colors: background, fields, text properties, etc... As well as adding additional spaces between the fields.

Please re-submit, I would like to see how may have changed the form.

        Food for thought.
You could get rid of a lot of the buttons by having a right click menu for those actions or having one button called menu and use the new xdialog toolbox. I like the toolbox as aan interim menu and use it a lot. Here is a sample of one

          Dave,

You might strengthen your form design as follows:

          1. Buttons at left side in a single column. Double/triple rows of buttons at top or double/triple tabs seldom work.

          2. Alignment, Alignment, Alignment. It is impossible to quickly get the gist of your form. Each section should have a similar left alignment.

          3. Most A5 developers result to artistic gimmicry, just because A5 allows you to do so. Restraint is always better.

          4. Limit yourself to three colors, perhaps two from the same color family with another contrasting color

          5. Limit yourself to 2 fonts, but use font size and weight for differentiation.

          6. Possibly look at the form portfolio of BENTO from FileMaker. These forms are not terribly challenging as form design goes, but each looks like a winner -- just by adhering to the guidelines suggested above.

          See: http://solutions.filemaker.com/datab...ates/index.jsp

Surprisingly, A5V10 gives you the tools to replicate the appearance of almost everything you see in the template library.
But I have yet to see any A5 forms that look this good.

Design a good form does not require artistic skills, just the application of a few principles -- which can keep you application from being a candidate for the next edition of the book GUI BLOOPERS.

Agree with what Bob stated especially on the alignment of fields/labels. To be a bit pickier, I would not intermix contrasting shapes as you have done with the oval buttons\round radio button and the diamond radio buttons--not cohesive enough for me and even a bit distracting.

              Dave,

I would align the fields so the form looks more structured - I'm not crazy about fields hanging out at the end of the sections.

I would make the field titles in Co Buyer the same as in Buyer.

I would move the Co Buyer fields into the same positions as Buyer so they'll be in a familiar position on the form. This may leave spaces in the Co Buyer section but I find that ok.

Dialogs from the xdialog toolbox are nice, but would be a lot nicer if you could use action scripting with them. This limits my use of them.

I agree with what's been said, but would like to give high emphasis on Mark's suggestion of combining the many buttons into fewer "grouped" dialogs containing buttons. I use a UDF that generates a "dropdown" dialog with columnated buttons (see pic) and been doing this with my folks for a long time and they like the clutter removed, even if it means an added step of addressing an interum dialog. Additionally I would add that I like frames and frame titles. I think they add a clean look in regionalizing the form. So I would frame at least the Buyer and Co-buyer sections, if not others, and maybe add shading to one or more of these frames.

BTW, where would one find this xdialog toolbox? I looked all over the app and in Help and I'm not thinking I am seeing what Mark demonstrated. Can someone point me to it, please.

                    Thanks to all!!!

I am looking in to a lot of the suggestions. Remember, this is a true working app and conforms to industry standard in most cases. It is already in use with much more of a cluttered look. What you see is much cleaned from the old one.

All the fields are absolutely necessary and have to be made to fit. Not much way to change that. Making all button as bullets and those on top are dropdown as it is.

                    Thanks again!!!
