Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Anyone recognize this tab strip control?

A5 uses a tab strip control (not to be confused with a tab control which is a container for other objects) to show open desktop forms at the bottom of the screen.

Does anyone recognize the control pictured below?
Does anyone know who the vendor is?

It's not Codejock, DBI, or Exontrol as far as I can tell.

    Thanks,

      Martin,

      But whose control is it?

For example, A5V10 offers Dockable Panels, not for desktop forms but only if you're willing to use XDialog. They did not write the control for the Dock Panel, but rather are using codejock's.

I very much like the style/appearance of this control and would like to use it in my application -- just like Alpha does in theirs.

I would email Selwyn direct, with the question.

Re: Anyone recognize this tab strip control?

          Martin,

I did write to Selwyn directly, and his suggestion was to:

          1. Create an XDialog using as an example the Learning XDialog>What's new in V8>Using a tab band to create tabs on an XDialog
          2. Place an XDialog supercontrol on my desktop form which incorporates the XDialog.

He did not share the source of that control.

I took a look at the code behind that example and gagged!
Holy shit, Batman, this is certainly not Rapid Application Development! This is not simple, easy, or intuitive. This is major, heavy duty coding.

I will spend some further time this weekend trying to disassemble that example to prove to myself that I can do it, but this is exactly what turns me off big time about XBasic.

But I have some extremely good news to share with other desktop developers who want the appearance of the modern style tabs that Alpha only offers through XDialog, but have neither the time nor inclination to reinvent the wheel. Developers who want their applications to have a somewhat upto date appearance today.

I found the ActiveX control I have been looking for, and am extremely please to share that it appears to be fully compatible with A5V10. Hurray!

          Take a look at this:
          http://www.softelvdm.com/tabsatl.html

And also at my screen prints below.
The first (greatly enlarged) shows my tabs replicate the appearance of A5V10's
The second shows the incredible number of control properties exposed. Note that I have selected Modern II as the tab style.

I also checked the Events>ActiveX events for the control and everything looks OK, but I did not actually test events.

I feel like I have found at least one needle in the haystack. I find it extremely frustrating that Alpha is not keeping its desktop controls up to date.

              Martin,
Unless you have quite a few programmers working for you I do not believe you need the version that costs $5000......Most would only require the single user/developer license costing $400 which has these license limits---

              • A licensed product can be used and installed by/for exactly one user (developer, programmer).
              • A licensed product includes redistributable components ("controls") that can be included and distributed with your completed application, for use by end-users of your application.
              • Redistribution of controls with a completed application is royalty-free.
