Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Unable to save new scripts and disappearing code

This is driving me up the wall!
Yesterday I created a new script and it worked perfectly. Today I created some new forms and then wanted to revise the script I created yesterday.
When I opened the script via Design all the code had disappeared. I reentered some new code and saved it but when I opened it again NO CODE!
I compacted the database. Didn't help. I deleted the blank script and tried to create a new one (using a different name) but I could not save it.
I tried writing just one line of code in a new script. After saving the new script it cannot be found.

I thought perhaps something had happened to Alpha5 (version 10) so I unistalled and reinstalled the program. Didn't help.

I thought I might have reached some sort of limit in number of scripts so I deleted an old script that I no longer needed. Didn't help!

Any ideas will be greatly appreciated!

    This shouldn't be happening.

A complete reinstall usually requires a complete uninstall beforehand. The recommended sequence is

    uninstall Alpha Five
remove (delete) Alpha Software entries from the registry
    reinstall Alpha Five

Complexities arise in some cases if the person doing the installation lacks the necessary system permission.

In other cases the presence of anti-virus scanning software can prevent a successful installation. If you've scanned the system for viruses then disabling the AV software whil you do the reinstall would be smart.

Did you create a script in an event of a layout like a form, or as a script on the code tab of the control panel.

If you create a script for a layout in design mode and it opens a tab on the code editor, save it while on the code editor, then also save your layout when going back to the layout design. This makes sure the saves happen.

If you created a new script on the control panel code tab, or why the code editor is active, this should not be an issue.

I am creating the script on the control panel code tab. I already have a couple of hundred scripts there. I can open an existing script and save changes but I cannot create a new script!

There is no practical limit for # of items on the code tab (although there is a limit on import of UDFs when you exceed 1000 UDFs to import at this time) or the size of the items (except the code editor has a limit to about 12000 lines per script/udf - maybe really a byte limitation though).

Best thing to try is, backup the database, and then do a compact of the database.

If that doesn't work, export all scripts and udf to a text file, create a new database, and import all the scripts and udf's and attach the tables/sets to the database.

P.S. As an aside, it also sounds like you have too many scripts. Many people write many scripts that are basically the same code can be easily condensed into one function (UDF) that runs the same code with different parameters, simplifying maintenance and debugging.

            Ira,

Great advice. I recreated my database per your suggestion and so far it appears to be working normally.

Thanks to everyone for your ideas and help. As always this message board is outstanding.
