Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Can not change, update delete a file

    I somehow have gotten a DBF file screwed up!! The error message says "Can not access file It is being used by another process" OR "Cant get exclusive control of the file to make a change or to delete the file" I can not change it, can not even delete it, can not add a field to the file. I have restarted the whole A5 system. I even wrote a script to try to open and close it but it will not let me use the FILE_RW_EXCLUSIVE parameter; Comes up as an error. i cant even delete the file and make a new one. Can not back up the file with A5 BACKUP RESTORE program. HELP!!

    It's likely Windows has the file locked open. Can you reboot your machine?

        Has the file been encrypted?
        Can you compact the table?
        Is it part of a set?
        Have you tried to open the offending file in something like excel?

        If there is no sensative data - zip the db and post here so we can look into it

          Has the file been encrypted? NEVER BEEN ENCRYPTED
          Can you compact the table? A5 WILL NOT ALLOW compaction
          Is it part of a set? YES IT IS PART OF A SET
          Have you tried to open the offending file in something like excel? I tried making a script
          tbl=file.open(filename,FILE_RW_EXCLUSIVE
          tbl.close()
          ERROR says it can not open in exclusive mode

          Have not tried using Excel. i dont use excel myself.

            Re: Can not change, update delete a file

            I take it the other tables to the set open fine on their own?

            Do you have working backup that has no issues with the table.

            Also do you have weird named files in the directory. Only check when Alpha is not open. Files with $$ or ## etc

            I use excel 2003 sometimes to open a dbf file and mass changes as it is easier and quicker. Then re save. I might want to sequentially number a column. Can do it in excel in minutes. I am sure there are gurus out there that will say there is just as simple a way in Alpha. I haven't found it without having to right a script.

            If your table is corrupt it will not open in excel either so a test would be good. If it is not then the problem will be elsewhere in the DB

              Does the troublesome table have a memo field? If so, Alpha stores memo field text in a file that has the table name, but an "FPT" filename extension. Use Windows File Explorer to check the size of the FPT file for your table. Has it ballooned?

                you can also get errors like this because it is shown as open by the registry - which as far as I know can only be corrected by running a registry cleaner

                has been an issue since V5

                  Re: Can not change, update delete a file

                  i had to go into Windows Explorer and delete the file and then re-enter the file under A5. Thanks those who tried to help. Still seems to me that there should be a way out of this in A5!! It would also be good to know HOW it happened. Obviously the file was not CLOSED properly but why is it the only file? Will never know.
