Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Dialog Box Apperance

Is it possible to change the dialog information on a Prompt for Parameters at runtime dialog box. I have attached a sample dialog box, with the verbiage circled that I would like to change.

    Hi Brent,

How would you like the text to change?

When you are creating the dialog or when it is in use and the text is to change conditionally?

      Keith,

I would like to change the text when Im creating the dialog. However, for future reference, is it possible to change the text based on a condition?

        Keith,

Sorry, I should have been clearer regarding changing the text. I would like to change the words used within the dialog box. Hope this helps to clarify what I want to do.

Brent, use Action Scripting to design your own dialog box.

            Tom,

For those of us who are not that familiar with Action Scripting, how would I go about designing a custom dialog box?

In your attachment you showed us a custom dialog box, how did you create that?

My first question to you then is, do you know how to work with Action Scripting at all?

                Keith,

I guess I know enough to get myself in trouble. You are correct in that I used Action Scripting to create the custom dialog box. The issue I am having is how would I change the wording of the dialog box. Here are the steps I used to create the dialog box:

                1. Created a Button from the Toolbox.
                2. Selected On Push from Events.
                3. Created a New Action.
                4. Saved the information.
                5. Opened the Form in Form View.
                6. Clicked the Button

Toms response to me unfortunately didnt provide the information I need to modify the information. Maybe there is not a way to accomplish what I need to do.

                  Re: Dialog Box Apperance

Brent, you can design multiple dialog boxes, each with different wording. Or, you can spend some time climbing a learning curve with xdialog and modify the code generated by action scripting to accommodate dynamic text.

                    Re: Dialog Box Apperance

                    Brent,

In addition to Tom's good suggestion about learning Xdialog, as you do know how to create a dialog box, from the steps outlined in your other post, I now understand that you want to know how to change the text in the dialog box you have already created.

This is so easy you will kick yourself. In the action script box, highlight your dialog box and click on Edit Action. This will re-open your dialog. Now click the Next button until you come to the area where the text boxes are that you want to edit the text. I'm sure you can figure the next moves.

                      Keith,

Thank you for your patience in helping me with this. I tried your suggestion (see attached) and changed the text. However, when I opened the dialog box on the Form, the text did not change.

I did experiment by copying the Button and changing the Action Script to Inline-Xbasic, and was able to edit the text. But with my Xbasic skills VERY limited, I am concerned in changing the Action Script to Xbasic in case I need to modify the dialog box in the future.

                        Hi Brent,

First, why did you convert your dialog to xbasic? There was no need as you could of changed the text in the manner I told you, also, maybe it did not work because you did not save the form as well.

Having converted to xbasic it was a good learning experience for you. Dont be afraid of spoiling what you have done as you can rebuild it over again.

Time spent learning is never time lost.

                          Re: Dialog Box Apperance

Until comfortable with xbasic, here is another suggestion (which I still use in one way or another)...instead of converting your action script to xbasic, look at the xbasic behind the action script (the eyeglasses icon), copy it, add a new action script called Inline xBasic, and paste the code there....then comment out the original action script (right click, bottom selection). Now you can experiment with adding/modifying the xbasic and still go back to the original just by uncommenting it.

Do this for any operation as well that you create and find the need to modify....keep the original operation, right click and look at the xbasic, copy it and create a script/function from the copied code....this way you can always modify the original operation via genies if wanted when a significant alteration has to be made due to changes needed....then recopy whatever changes you wanted to add to your modified code.....it is like having a backup of your code....and you can safely see what your mods have done....and if they blow it up, just recopy from the original....
