Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Multiple SQL Server Databases

Purchased A5V10 for a datamining project. Need to open one SQL database and update tables in a new SQL database. Not possible, nor desirerable to have new tables in old database.

    Several questions come to mind:
1 - Is it possible to have more than one database open at a time. Old database is read-only, new one obviously is update mode. Use two ODBC sets?

2 - What is the best method to perform such tasks - forms? simple scripts?

3 - Does anyone know of code samples that might be a template or training tool for me on this need?

Everything I see about Alpha says it is a quality product. I used powerbuilder several years ago and Alpha has some serious improvements over that IDE.

    Thank you in advance
    Mike

    Re: Multiple SQL Server Databases

Welcome to A5 and this board!

Yes, you can work with multiple databases. One of the easiest ways is to simply set up named connection strings for each database. Then, for instance, you can read and process data from one database but easily insert a record into a different database using a different saved connection string.

Your question about the easiest or best way depends in some part, at least, on what you're doing so I hesitate to even try to suggest code or methods to you.

To begin exploring, I might suggest you set up an Alpha DAO named connection string to one or more of your databases, then use the Action Scripting Genie to begin discovering how you might work with those named connection strings.

90% of our accomplishments is due to the confidence we get from others sharing their insight and how they got their arrows in the back. The other 10% is just hard research and experimentation and lots of backing up our work!

I knew it could be done just needed some confidence. Thank you. I will post my results of my experimentations in a few days.

Again, thank you for the quick response.

SQL Server databases as input and output of a copy

        Alpha5v10.5
        SQL Server 2008
Need to use something like the import capability to create/append data from one SQL database (a view with several joins) to another single SQL table. Using two ODBC connections works fine as far as defining the databases to be used.

Import/export geared towards the local DBF database and what I need is a true SQL server to SQL server table copy (with changes during the copy).

Why you ask? I am having to denormalize the database to gain efficiency for the datamining. Common practice and I want to use A5 as much as possible.

        Thanks in advance
