Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

  • Input data to field with button

    Hi Alpha experts,

    I have table , fields and form. I have form for user to keyin the data (numeric)for each field and save it after finish and it works well.

    The problem is I want a button that has default value for example 1,000 when user click on it (OnPush) the default value (1,000) will show in a field as if user just key in the value by himself.
    I want this because to reduce the human error and reduce time to key in some data.

    I try to create a button and set the specific value to field. It can send the default value (1,000) to a field automatically but I don't want it like that.

    I want it when user clikc a button (with specific default value 1,000) and then this value will show on a field in form that usually user must key in all data by himself (and cursor still waiting to edit or keyin more in that field)

    thank you for any commend and advise

    Hi Peterth,

    This code on a button should do it for you...

    :frmname:fieldname.value = 1000.00

        Re: Input data to field with button

        If you go to the top menu and choose View-->Object Explorer you can use this to figure out most/all syntax needed. Just choose the form wanted, choose the object on the left pane and, in this case, the Value on the right pane....then click copy to clipboard and usually choose the relative syntax.

          Hi Mike,

          If I have a single form , I test the code as David gave me it works well.
          but in case I have invoice set form and sub-form in it it doesn't work
          I use :cpaid:amount.value = 1000.00 --> it works if I use it in a single form
          but if above form is a sub-form of invoice form , it doesn't work.

          Please direct the right way please

            Mike's suggestion of the object explorer is where you should start.

            What I do is select the object on the form, open the object explorer, click the current object button to synchronize the explorer to that object.

            Then you can do as Mike has suggested and get the proper name of the object.

            relative name is best practice......

              Hi AI,

              I try to explore the object follow as Mike and you advise. I can find many objects and can find the object of button but I still don't know how and what code I can use to pass the default value of button in to a target field.

              Please advise.

                Re: Input data to field with button

                Here's a database with one form and a sub form.

                The frmTest form has a default form subform and a Saved Layout form subform.

                There's a button on the main form that sets the value in the default form.

                There's a button on one of the subforms that sets the value in that subform.

                The syntax is...

                Have a look at the code behind each of the buttons... the code syntax is the same. Hope it helps.

                  Re: Input data to field with button

                  Hi David,

                  Thank you for your sample code. I learn it and it works well but I have to use the syntax below
                  :formname:Object Name.fieldname.value = 1000.00

                  Now I can create the button when I click the button it can pass the default value (1000.00) into a field (Customer Paid) but I don't understand why the result is not the same as when user key-in the data into Customer Paid field directly.

                  What I do is I have main form create from set , embeded browse to calculate total, qty, and post the qty into inventory and sub-form for user to key-in the paid money directly and also the button which has the default value of paid money to reduce the human error. User can click it and the default value can pass into the Customer Paid field as if user key-in directly just one clik.

                  I can create a button follow with your sample code when user click a button the default value can pass into a field but it doesn't work and the result is not same as user key-in the value directly into Customer Paid field.

                  What is difference?

                  Thank you for any advise.

                    Hi Peterth,

                    I think it's time to zip and post your database so we can see what's going on. That would be a great help.

                    Overall, code isn't firing somewhere.

                      Thank you David

                      I want to do that but I develop the application with my local langquage. I have to convert or change many forms and data into English. It takes time so much.
                      Do you have other way I can show or explain to everyone to know what I try and I need.

                      Now I can use the sample code and create the button and when user click on it the default value of button can pass the data into the field I want but the result is not the same as when user key-in directly in a field.
                      What I miss?

                        Re: Input data to field with button

                        'using xbasic on a button: copies values of varables to field names on a form.
                        parentform:vdocs2.value = var->vdocs
                        parentform:Taxable.value = var->vtaxable
                        parentform:Disctax0.value = var->vdisctax
                        parentform:Wartax.value = var->vwartax

                        'going for directly to the open table("mon" is a table name).
                        mon->lofactor = var->factor

                        these are actually done from a script or function, but will work fine from a button on a form.

                        more can be done.

                        Don't forget to refresh the form after or you won't see the changes.

                        I agree with DavidK - a copy of your work would be really helpful.
