Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

How to prevent Next Rec button creating New records

So far I have found Non coding methods for creating my apps, Alpha 5 is awesome....

My problem is that I am creating blank records in some tables by using "next record" buttons when navigating back and forward thru previously entered data on a sub form.

I would like to prevent the next record button navigating past the last entered record and leave the creation of new records to the New Record button that I have on my form.

If anyone can help me keep my data tidy I would really appreciate it:)

Depending on the grid template you are using...
On the properties section you will usually an "Allow insert" tick option. Make sure this is unticked.

      Hi Claire
Thanks for the speedy reply. Its a desktop app that I'm working on. So I dont think I'm using grids.... It's a standard form thats based on a set. Maybe I should investigate grids, I believe they can be used on desktop app's in 10.5, any advice you can give would be appreciated.

or on desktop you can also go form properties
and then on the form page you can select restriction enter records.
Although I have not tested this much since I am using mostly web :-)

            Hi Claire.
Tried using that restriction, Unfortunately It prevents totally the entering of new records. I cant seem to find any action script operations that allow the restriction to be overridden.
But thanks for the suggestion, I guess I will have to learn xbasic to see if I can program around the restriction.

              Hi Steve,

I created my own Toolbar with navigation buttons on it.

Each Nav button has topparent.restrict_navigation=.f. in the Enable Expression builder.

                Hi Keith
Looks like I have inadvertently got involved in a very helpful network of people. Thanks for your reply....

Is making your own toolbar available to us "non-coders"? I fully intend to get to grips with what seems to be an awesome product but this is very much an experiment with a real life use. At the moment I dont have the necessary knowledge in Xbasic..

Any pointers you can give will help...THANKS!!!

                  Hi Steve,

Sooner or later you are going to have to get your hands dirty.

I would have never of known about how to put that bit of code in unless I had been shown.

Start with a few simple functions to practice, like Left(), Right() and Substr() to see the results.

Re: How to prevent Next Rec button creating New records

All that has been said here can be done via Action Scripting (AS) as well....when trying to change properties/values of any object I always check the AS left pane Objects Properties (Set and Get) and the resulting right pane's Set Properties of Object(s). The topparent.restrict_navigation=.f. can be set from there for the form.....But you will benefit immensely by experimenting as Keith suggests as xbasic will be the way in which to modify what will eventually become limiting to your coding with AS.

Re: How to prevent Next Rec button creating New records

To prevent your blank records being created by clicking the next button you should consider one of the two following alternatives.

                      1) Make your form Modal - that will stop it dead but it does mean you have to setup buttons to allow change to existing records and to enter new records.

                      2) Make a field in your table a mandatory field via field rules.

                      Hope that helps
