left() function

This function doesn't seem to be working. I have a dialog box with a couple of check box list boxes and need to extract the date value for the list. Am trying the for each...next process to read through the list. Here is my code:

This builds the list:

DIM SHARED vDates as C = ""
dim vNights as n = 5    'var->glo_NightStay
dim vDate1 as D = {07/26/2010}  'parentform:vArrDate.value
dim vDay as c = cdow(vDate1)
for i = 1 to vNights
	vDates = vDates + dtoc(vDate1)+"  ("+vDay+")" + crlf()
	vDate1 = vDate1 + 1
	vDay = cdow(vDate1)
next

This is supposed to extract the date portion of each line:

dim vNewList as c = ""

for each x IN vDates
	vNewList = vNewList + left(x,10) + crlf()
next
msgbox(vNewList)

Help on this would be greatly appreciated.

for i=1 to w_count(vdates,crlf())
temp=left(word(vdates,i,crlf()),10)
vNewList = vNewList + temp + crlf()
next
msgbox(vNewList)

since vdates is a variable with multiple entries with a carriage return at the end of each one
w_count(vdates,crlf()) - gives you a count of the number of entries there are in the variable

word(vdates,i,crlf())
if i=1, it gives you the firt one, if i=2, the second one, etc
left(word(vdates,i,crlf()),10) gives you the first 10 characters

I am not on a machine to test this right now but your original code will most likely work if use x.value in the left function. I don't know exactly why that is. I picked that up along the way sometime ago. And now when ever I use the For ... Each syntax I reference the each with .value with no problems.

Super, Tim. Added the .value and it works. Don't know why it doesn't show that in the help. Only showed using "x".
