Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    from version 5 to 7 to 10.5

In 2003 I developed an application using version 5. It has multiple tables, and some have up to 30-40,000 records. There are now 10 users. I bought version 7, redesigned the application, but never implemented it. We are now upgrading to windows 7, and I just bought version 10.5 plus the runtime.

I need to implement the version 7 database to version 10.5 and populate it with the data from the version 5 database my office is using. So question one -do I just open the version 7 database in version 10.5, or is there something else I need to do?

Question 2 -how do I get the records from the version 5 database to the version 10.5 database? Do I directly import, or do I need to transfer to an excel spreadsheet, then to the new database application?

As you can tell, I am not a software person - so what is probably a very straight forward process seems difficult to me. Any help is much appreciated.

    Alan,

I have a db made in version 1, moved it to 3, then 5, then 7, and then to 10/10.5. It never hiccuped exept for real MINOR things.

to transfer your data, just append to the new empty tables from your version 10. You could also just copy your dbf and fpt files directly if there are no table changes.

some of the ways were changed as far as active scripting in a form and some other niceties. So far a few legacy things are still there in mine and cause no problems.

    Hope you luck!

If you copy the .dbf tables directly, be aware of field name truncations! Field names with more than 10 characters will get truncated. Ran into this migrating some v7 tables to v10.5 just the other day.

long fieldnames (the long part) are stored in one of the dictionaries for the table - if you get a dbf from an adb that is not currently in the one you are moving it to (no dictionaries) and paste it and then open it, fieldnames greater than (I think) 10 will be truncated, becasue the rest of the field name was in the dictionary.

if the table structure is absoluetly the same on both sides, then you can safely just get the dbf's and fpt's - but if there is ANY DIFFERENCE you will need to append.

              Yes,
I was going to Append records from tables in v7 app upgraded to v10 app tables. There were a few records in v10 app used for testing and evaluation that I didn't want to loose. After copying the entire v7 app, I renamed my tables from the copy of v7 app <tablename>7. I copied all the tables from v7app folder to v10 app folder and added the tables to the v10 app. The tables structures for each table from the v7 app were identical to the corresponding tables in v10 app. Because they were essentially "new tables" added to the app, all the field names > 10 characters in the added tables from v7 app were truncated.

I had forgotten that this happens, since I don't really ever do this. Just a reminder.
