Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

_help.dbf is not a help file after last two updates

    Hi folks,

Since I updated the last two times this past week (I had hoped the last one would fix this) I can no longer open my local help files.

A5 returns "_help.dbf is not a help file".

The file is there, and I can open the table from the control panel. I created new local help files two different times in two programs and all goes well, and saves, but the next time I try to open them either from within the 'propeties' settings, or via the programs I still get the 'not a help file' error.

Is anybody else having this problem or did something go wrong on my machine?

    Thanks in advance ....

    Ken

Re:" _help.dbf is not a help file" after last two updates

THIS IS A BUG CAUSED BY THE LAST TWO UPDATES

I reinstalled the July 1st update and the errors went away. I then applied the current update and the error returns.

DO NOT update client runtimes (affects developer app AND the runtime) if you have custom help files stored in Alpha5 format (dbf).

This bug has been reported to Alpha Software.

Have experienced identical problem and have solved it by going back to earlier patch.

How does one communicate with Alpha?:
      A. To report a Bug like this.
      B. To find out what they are doing about a fix.

Re: _help.dbf is not a help file after last two updates

I already reported the problem to Selwyn. This will be fixed in the next update.

I also rolled back to the July 1st update to get around it since I didn't need the newest update for anything anyway.

        Should be fixed soon.

          Bruce,
How does one communicate with Alpha?:
          A. To report a Bug like this.
          B. To find out what they are doing about a fix.
A.....In Alpha, Top Menu-->Help-->Submit Bug Report.
B.....:D Either they will fix it and it will be listed in a patch that is put out ... or they will fix it and reply here (or directly to you).....or ....none of the above.......

Generally speaking, if you want to get a hold of someone at Alpha, this peer supported messageboard is NOT the place to try to do so...emailing them seems to get the best results....I don't think I have ever not been given at least one response when I have emailed Alpha about an issue or request.
