Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Where is the Log File???

I now get an error message when I work on an app I've been working on for years. Something about deleting a log file . Each time I try and work on the app I get an error about a log file and then the program closes

Re: Where is the Log File???

Not sure but the only log file I know about is the one you can turn on or off under

    View -> Settings -> techsupport

If you have change operating systems and this was turned on the defalt location may have changed and the file might no longer exist

    ALL Specualtion on my part

Thanks for the reply but I checked on both computers and the Log file is turned off under settings and tech support.
Now thw application is useless because even when I reinstall it from the other computer that does not have the error it still crashes when opened with a big Application Aborted error. I have had a few prolems with the new 10.5 version and this one is causing me a lot of trouble.

        Fred

What version of 10.5 are you using.

Have you installed a patch recently. If that is the case maybe rolling back to a previous patch will help.

        Just guessing.

Being very specific when it comes to error is always a good thing. "Something" about deleting a log file - what exactly does it say?

"I get an error about a log file" - You have a MUCH better chance of someone helping you if you can state specifically what the error is.

Not sure if I can help, but guessing what you are talking about is probably not going to do either of us any good.

Thas becasue the message is large and can not be copied. I just sent a bug report in on this and it tokk 15 minutes to type it. There is nothing listed on the boards or in any of Alphas help files that refers to a log file.

            APPLICATION ABORTED

Program will close. One or more users may logged in either have correctly or incorrectly. Deleting the log fle with cause it to be rebuilt when all users close the program.

Single machine not on any network. No other applications are effected. Only one.

              Fred,

Just trying to help you out. Screen shots always work well, also.

Hope Alpha can help you out.

PS - sound like the same (or simliar problem) you had last year. http://msgboard.alphasoftware.com/al...ad.php?t=80534

Were you able to resolve it then?

Re: Where is the Log File???

You don't think it could be the new feature which keeps copies of the forms etc?
You also mentioned that you have been using this app for years. Did you migrate it to 10.5?

Not sure how many update versions Alpha can accommodate.

Have you tried lifting and shifting the app table by table and opening what you can using 10.5.

Apologies to anyone I haven't managed to upset yet.
You are held in a queue and I will get to you soon.
