Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    State ComboBox - How To

    Ladies / Gentlemen

This product is very very good but at the same time very very bad.

Let me explain, I want to create a DropDownComboBox in the WEB Edition of AlphaFive.

In my customer Table I have a Field called STATE, it is a two character field which contains the valid State abbreviation for that customer.

In AlphaFive, after much looking around I found that you could have a LOOKUP for the field values.

    LOOKUP = Checked
    LOOKUP TYPE = Edit-Combo List
    LOOKUP DEFINITION = Static

Now here is the rub, I for the life of me can not find where you would put in the Standard List of States, I know that you could type in each one, but AlphaFive is such a Great Product I am sure that their is a way to specify the internally stored list of State Names.

BUT I CAN NOT FIND IT.

I mean their are two functions that I found

CSTATE() --- it looks up the full name from the 2 character abreviation

    and

CSTATE_ABREVLOOKUP() --- it looks up the 2 character abreviation from the full name.

That must mean that its stored somewhere.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Mark,
Take another look at cstates()....you can have it return the abbreviated or full name of all the states dependent upon the argument you enter into the function..."A" for the abbreviations....."S" for the full names....or even both as they show in the help file example with the pipe separating them as "A|S".
    For instance---
? cstates("A" + crlf() ) in the interactive would yield all the abbreviations
    in a crlf list.

    Is this what you want?

I am not sure if this is what you want from your description but If you want a drop down box with the state choices, choose Drop Down box for the control type. Under Choices, click on Pre-defined lists on the bottom and there are a couple of state choices.

A lookup (for a text field) is for looking up information in a table.

That is exactly what I wanted.

        Thanks.

Also do you know of any documentation that discusses these simple types of questions on AlphaFive?

Or maybe a guide for Newbie's that walks you thru all of the property options and explains their use?

Unfortunatly not. I glean most info from the board and the videos that have been posted (and by poking around)

That is so sad, I am finding out how GREAT a product AlphaFive is, but I wonder how many people just quit using it because of a lack of documentation.

Now the follow on question, the DropDownBox works great but how can I set the State Field in the Grid to display the full State Name from the Stored State Abreviation.

I know that I have to use the 'cstates("S")', but I do not know where to put it.

            Thanks again

Re: State ComboBox - How To

Is the data for the CSTATE functions hard coded into Alpha? I am here in the UK/Ireland and my potential marketplace is here. If I could replace the US data with locale specific info it would save me a bit of time.

Re: State ComboBox - How To

it would appear that this is for US/Canada only

                CSTATE()

                Syntax

                State_Name as C = CSTATE( State_Code as C )

                Argument
                Description

                State_Code
The two character code for a US state or Canadian province.

You could just create a table with the abbreviationa and full names and do a lookup on the table?

if you are using a dbf, simply create a calculated field and use that on the grid.

                  ie fullstate = cstate(state)

I am not using .DBF files, I am attaching to MSSQL Server 2008 R2.

I think it is still the same concept - use a caluclated field.
