Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

How do I get a refund on v10.5?

I would like to seek a refund of the $900.00 plus that I spent last week on Alpha 5 v10.5 Developer Edition, Application Server and Unlimited Runtime Edition.

I have never experienced a more frustrating week in my professional career. I have been a longtime Alpha Five (and prior) user and have a custom application that I have been using since the early 90's. I created some of it, hired some of it out to the professionals on this board, etc.

The application has worked flawlessly until the introduction of v10.

I downloaded and experimented with the initial trial version of v10 when it was made available and experienced multiple problems with it so I decided not to buy it. This was the first version I didn't purchase immediately upon its release in about 15 years.

I recently started having second thoughts and came to the conclusion that if I didn't try it again that i would be forced to miss any future releases as well. I hoped that with the release of v10.5 and the release of several bug fixes, it would run more stable for me.

    Boy was I wrong...

I've spent countless hours tracking down issues that have risen since installing this version - using count instead of dbcount, etc. Why is it that using a calculated field to count records works fine in v9 but the same form takes 2 minutes to load in v10?

I fully understand that most changes I have made to make my application more v10 compliant should have been done anyways. I also realize that a lot of it is 'sloppy' coding but regardless, it worked perfectly fine with version 9 and prior.

Now I've run into problems that cannot be explained or duplicated -they are totally random. I can't even ask for help from one of the professionals on this board because I cannot duplicate them - they just happen for no explained reason.

For example... We enter up to several hundred new records in our database every day. Some days all is well but on others we get random strange errors. We have several forms with embedded browses on them. Suddenly several of the new records we created that day are listed twice in all the embedded browses and you cannot even select the record in the browse. Even though every record has a unique id number, it displays these records twice with the same id number. If I look at the
table itself, the record is only in there once. Why is it that it is displayed twice in all embedded browses? I even created a new form with an embedded browse with no filters or queries on it, and these records still show twice. The only way to correct it is to restart the server and then rebuild all the indexes.

I thought this might be a fluke but I was wrong. It has happened 4 times in the last two days.

Now we are also having unacceptable results with our invoicing system. Bear in mind that our current scripts have run flawlessly for years. Now, suddenly and randomly, we are experiencing very weird behavior.

I don't even know how to explain what has been occurring but here goes...

Today, we had 16 records flagged to be invoiced for a customer. This is very routine and we do this multiple times a day. The invoice was successfully created and our dialog box appeared showing the amount of records and the total of the invoice and both of these were also correct. Yet, when we print the invoice it is off by several hundred dollars and several of the records appear multiple times on the invoice and the invoice total is way off. We attempted to void the invoice and recreate it and received different results each time.

I restarted the server, went back to v9, rebuilt the indexes and all seems to be working fine again.

I've given up and would like to get a refund on all the v10 products I purchased.

I can understand your frustrations in this situation as i have just started using version 10.5 up from version 6 and started using alpha in 1996 and i am by no means an alpha expert. i have had my share of issues and i must defend alpha, the people here have been outstanding in helping me thru my trails and tribulations as my application is also in use everyday with my company. If i may suggest maintain you version 9 application and continue to work out issues with version 10.5 i feel it will pay off in long run.

    Good luck

Tim, no one here on this board can help you get your money back. You have to contact customer service at Alpha.

Re: How do I get a refund on v10.5?

Ok - it's a new day and I am going to try to approach this with a more level headed approach.

We created an invoice this morning while still running v10.5. There was only one item that was invoiced to the customer. However, when we printed the invoice, the same item appeared 3 times on the invoice and the total was three times higher than it should be. (This has never happened while running v9 or earlier)

This invoice was created from a machine running a shadow copy of the database. We tried to rebuild the indexes from this machine and received the attached error message.

I shut down all workstations, rebooted the server, re-ran the update indexes from the same workstation and it ran successfully this time. Also, the above invoice now prints correctly as well.

So - it appears that maybe a file is being left open when the invoicing script is run???

          Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I would also be willing to pay anyone who is willing to look over my invoicing scripts for suggestions.

            Tim,

Not that this would help, or??

the path I see looks extremely long. I came from dos when there was no windows and dos was very limited and I guess I still follow the rules of simplicity works best.

When you shadow a db to a folder on the root drive(c:?) it gets a lot less congested than a path like (c:\user\dan\docs\shadow\app\something.adb") a path to a shadow as I and most of us is like ("c:\foldername\something.adb"). It may not ever have a problem with the long path, but is less complicated. Same applies to a server part of the app. some do different, but mine is simply

              Dave,

I've always installed the shadow to the default path that A5 recommends when creating the shadow.

That certainly makes sense though and I will go ahead and rebuild them using your suggestion.

              Thanks

Tim, as a desktop/lan developer only, I can appreciate your frustration. In some cases, things that have been working consistently for the last 10 to 12 years no longer work.

However, I can assure you there are work-a-rounds once you figure out the issues.

My comments are not about refunding but about being frustrated.

I can understand your frustation. I have several applications on the web. They have been working fine under ver. 8, 9 and 10. Last week I uddated to ver. 10.5. As soon as I republish an application, even if I do not modify anything they do NOT run anymore on the Web server. I have NOT touched the Web server. It is still running ver. 10. I am assuming that applications published with ver. 10.5 should run correctly on the Web server 10. You can see some of these at http://sky.campus.mcgill.ca
