Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Brother MFC 665CW printing problems

    Hi guys
Alpha 5 v10, I created a small desktop app for a client to invoice customers. Nothing fancy really but it works.

I installed the v10 runtime with the latest patch today on their computer running Vista Home Premium 64bit, and the app runs flawlessly, but when I print/preview the report, information (lines etc) is missing from the middle of the page, it shifts everything over like 2 inches to the left.

Of course everything looks fine here on my developement machine.

The weird thing is, I installed CUTEPdf printer on their machine and it prints pdf files perfectly, and the preview shows perfectly, too. So they do have a (kind of cumbersome) work around until I get this issue resolved for them.

I downloaded & installed the latest software from Brother hoping for a fix, but no change.

I am thinking about installing the runtime on another computer here in the shop and printing to my printers here to see if possibly it's an issue with the runtime, but I have my doubts.

I have attached 2 files so you can see what I am seeing. At first I thought it was a margin issue with the printer, then I saw the missing lines in the middle of the report.

This is the only printer they have at their office (pdf printers aside of course)

Has anyone run in to this before?

Any help would be great! Thanks guys!

by the way, the nonsense words on the invoice is not a problem; we just typed gibberish in there so something would print.

Re: Brother MFC 665CW printing problems

Normally when I have trouble printing on some printers but not others it is because of the page size. In the report maker settings, make sure that you select letter 8.5x11 (if thats what you are printing on) and I usually also select "shrink to fit" option.

BTW, make sure the Brother MFC 665CW is the default printer on the computer. I have seen weird issues when there is some other default printer with different paper sizes, not just in Alpha but also IE and Chrome.

Hi and thanks for the suggestions! I will double-check those setting but I am pretty sure I did that. I do remember seeing the 'shrink to fit' option.

It's an easy thing to shrink the whole report so I will try that.

Not exactly sure when I will have a chance to try it out, but I'll let you know how I made out!

      Thanks!!

BTW it is their default printer...

Also make sure the fonts you used in your report design are installed and available on the customer's workstations.

          Thanks guys...
Resizing the report (made it smaller) worked fine.
Guess each printer is different because I tried it on 4 different printers and this Brother is the only one that had the issue! Weird but it's good now!
          Thanks again!
