Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Not available in the Runtime

I have 2 databases that I am getting this error on. Does anyone have any ideas what the problem might be.
They run fine with Version 9 runtime, but this error appears with Version 10.5
    The error is:
    "Not available in the Runtime"

In what context? I think we need some more detail.

I'm not sure what you want, but basically I have 2 applications that have been developed starting back with Alpha Five version 5 with changes, etc along the way. Both have been working fine in both the Developer edition and the runtime editions of Alpha Five. Alpha Five version 10.5 runtime was installed on the computers in the network as an upgrade and now this error appears. One application has security and requires a password, the other does not. For the password protected one, the login dialog comes up, the password is entered and then error message appears. the dialog box is closed and the app seems to run fine. The other application is similar, the application will appear to load, then the error message appears with the control panel in the background, but when the dialog is closed, the application quits. The happens on both XP and Windows 7 computers.

Re: Not available in the Runtime

Well, I don't have a lot of experience with the runtime 10.5 but I just checked one of my complex apps for problems like you describe using the runtime and have found none. Seems like you may have to put together a sample of the apps for either Alpha to look at (via a bug report) or for some of us here to look at. But it sounds like a problem for Selwyn to me.

Mike, I agree with Raymond. That error message indicates that Alpha is being asked (by script or field rule) to do something that's not permitted with the run engine. i.e. open a form in design mode. You might study the startup sequences carefully to see if you can determine where this happening. Have you run debug on the startup sequences?

Re: Not available in the Runtime

In both of these applications I set the autoexec script to have the "end" command as the first line so that it would not run. When the app is run then it would simply open the control panel, no forms or anything else would open. The error continues.

However, thank you Tom for a clue, because I went to the "database properties" tab in the developer version looking for something. I unchecked the box that says "Show the Web Projects Control Panel when this Database is opened" clicked ok and then opened the app with the runtime. Viola, no error. So that solved it. So the runtime sees that box checked and will error out.

As far as submitting a bug, probably not. I have spent many hours submitting bugs over the the past few years, especially with version 10 which were fixed before release. That was good. In my last submission however it turned out bad, so no more submissions.

            Thanks Tom for the clue.

Re: Not available in the Runtime

Just a stupid thought, but when I reinstalled an app in windows7 on a network I had to go back into the startup icon and set campatibility for XP under the icon properties. Then it ran properly.

Where Microsoft is concerned, there is no such thing as a stupid thought.
