Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

  • Dynamic Color not working

I am trying to dynamically modify the color of a text field. I have it working in part, but some of the colors are not working.

I have a field in the database called font_color, which stores the color I want the font to be. I dynamically overrode the font color and a portion of the resulting report is attached.

For instance, if you see the example, The font color is changing between black and green, but red does not work.

Stranger still - red is one of the colors available from the system list, while Green is not. If anything should work incorrectly, I would have thought green!

    Any suggestions?

The easiest way that I have found to change color of text and data is by using the dynamic properties of the object. I guess no one has responded, since you did not give any details as to how you are attempting the color change, just that it is not working.

      Re: Dynamic Color not working

      Sorry if I wasn't clear.

In my data, I have a field called Font_Color.

In the font_color field I have values such as Green, Black, Red, etc...

In the dynamic properties of one of the fields on my report, I have placed the "Font_Color" field. (See attached.)

I have tried other colors too - Purple and Orange. Only green seems to work.

This doesn't seem like it should be so hard.

You are right, and it isn't that hard. If you click on the ... in the dynamic font properties you will open up the color equation genie, which is where you type in your expressions to choose whatever color you want, under the circumstances you want it to change. I do not beleive you can just drop a fieldname in there since it must equate to a logical value.

          Re: Dynamic Color not working

          But that is not true.

The genie makes you put in a logical value, but the full expression comes out to a color.

To see what I am talking about, add in a couple of sample expressions, and then open the "expression builder mode".

You can see that the expression builder is just a series of case statements that evaluate to a color, not a logical value.

I want to be able to change the color on the fly - and I can't do that very easily with the genie.

Sure, I could pick the top 10 colors I might want to use and build a big case statement around that, but I don't think I should have to.

            By the way,

The color genie you are showing in the example is for the browse editor. The report editor has a different color genie that only allows you to modify the font color, not the font and the background at the same time - which would be cool!

If you are looking for a confirmation that it does not work the way you think it should, then you have one.

If you want it to work, follow the Genie.

The color genie description is the one that comes up when you hit the help key.

Thanks for the confirmation that it doesn't work :)

I'll try to work it out with the genie to see if I can get something at least useable for now.

If all else fails, I may submit it as a bug.

                  Re: Dynamic Color not working

I got an answer from Selwyn:

fields that are read from a table in a5 have trailing spaces.

so your expression needs to be:

When I use the alltrim command, it works as expected.
