Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Reservations on LAN with two or more PCs

I've tried before to solve my problem with this one, to date no luck. Possibly its my ability restrictions versus my end desire.

At present I have a LAN with 6 PCs running my business.

I have one reservation PC that reserves stock between a start_date and an end_date then marks a logical field .t. or .f.

In my reservation form I have a lookup field that filters the lookup to exclude the .t. thus leaving available stock to be reserved accordingly.

This works flawlessly for one PC. As soon as I use a second PC the start_date and the end_date change and overwrite the logical field with a new data, causing problems for the first PC if its still being used for a reservation.

I was advised to use an array, however, I am unable to figure this out and remain stuck with one PC only doing reservations.

I have searched for reservation apps problems on the message board but none have my answer.

Car hire, tool hire, hotel reservations or in my case tuxedo hire. The bottom line is a start_date and an end_date.

    Any input welcome.

John, more information is needed. Can you break this down into smaller pieces, supplying details about how the table is organized, and describing the specific sequence that causes "problems", and lastly, describe in detail the "problems" that are caused ?

Re: Reservations on LAN with two or more PCs

      John,
If you are a little more specific about what it is that is being recorded on the one PC currently doing the reservations. What table or set is being for the reservation form and what is that same set and form what you are trying to use on the other PC's? I would think you would have one table with customers. Fields in this customer table would include customer name, address, phone number, date added to the database, etc. Then I would have a separate table called reservations.... this table would include fields like reservation ID (autoincrement field rule), customer ID, tuxedo style(or tuxedo ID that links to a table called tuxedos that has a record for each tuxedo that is available for rental or purchase, rental price, date of pickup, date of return. Then you could run a report or open a browse on a set made up of the tuxedo table with a one-to-one link to the customer table, linked by the customer ID field. Then you could filter this report by start_date . So say you wanted to see all the rentals for June 2010, your filter would be, (tuxedo->rental start date >= {6/1/2010} .and. tuxedo->rental end date <= {6/30/2010} ). so even if the return date of the rental is in july the reservation would appear on this report. Instead of a report you could also use a browse on the tuxedo/customer set mentioned above with the same filter. You could run another report on the same set but instead of start date replace that field with end date and you will have a list of all the tuxedo's being returned for that date range.

Also, here is a good resource for data models...they have several models based on reservations...

here is a generic reservation data model -

        Lee and Tom

        Thanks for the input.

I'm looking at the examples at the moment and I will break down my problem it to bite size chunks today and post them

        Regards

Thanks for those links, Lee. I'm designing a camp program that deals with lodging/rooms. I am assuming though, that there won't be more than a couple of users taking reservations since only one is in charge of that with a backup. So my solution is to have two temp tables to load up with data from other tables looking for usage between start date and end date. Of course the temp tables need to be emptied before being loaded, so I check to see if table1 is being used and if so, use table2.
This would seem to work in my case. But I'm going to study the layout of those links some more.
          Thanks again.
