Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Custom Help Stops Working

My custom help file has stopped working. I get this message:
    "a_pbs1_help.dbf isn't a help file"

How can I get my help file working again? Thanks.

        Selwyn,

The patch fixed nothing. The help files work fine on Win7 Pro machine, but error out on an XP Pro machine. I'm using the exact same files as they are in MyDropbox. So each program is accessing the same thing. What gives.

Also found other bug. Code does not excute from a button, but works perfectly when executed directly from the Control Panel. This makes no sense. Would be happy to talk with you by phone.

sorry. i don't agree with you.

the help file editor works fine on xp machines. it is actually impossible that it would work on win7 and not xp.

check to see that the patch is actually installed on the xp machine.

it is also unlikely that there is a bug with regard to executing code from a button. you would need to submit a test app that demoes the problem and we can investigate.

            Selwyn,

I would like to send the db to you, but I don't want to have it publicly posted. I've been dialoging with Tom Cone on the Msg Bd. He looked at the program and said this: "I took a good look and can't explain what you're seeing. Alpha is having trouble closing the Main_menu form, so the table MemVars remains open, so the backup doesn't happen. At least that's what I think may be happening. Cannot say conclusively. Seems very odd."

How can I get the db to you privately?

            Thanks for your help.

Selwyn, despite your statements to the contrary, my help files don't work on my XP Pro machine, but the very same files work on my WinPro7 machine. Its the exact same file as I'm using a DropBox to allow me to work on the program from anywhere. I'v also attached help files.zip which contains all of the a5 help files.

Any ideas why it works on one machine and not another???

                Thanks

I am sorry, I don't mean to contradict you, but I do have to insist there there is no bug. I have tested your help file on XP and Windows 7 and it works fine. I added custom help to the customer information form in alphasports using your help file and a new, auto - generated help file. In both cases help worked fine.

Perhaps the file permissions as the window level on your xp machine have gotten messed up. But whatever the reason that it does not work on your XP machine is, it is not because of a bug in Alpha Five.

Can you go to help/about on your xp machine and let us know what the version number is?

                    Selwyn,
The latest patch (9/8/10)resolved the problem. Thanks.

                    BTW,

Really like A5. Would like to see Compiler for program that would make it available cross-platform, e.g., for the Mac.:)

Any chance this may happen in the near future?

                    Thanks.

                      thanks.

this is not really on the horizon.

i don't know if your app is for personal use, or if there are many users.

for apps with many users, i think the best approach is to make a browser based app. the app server of course will have to run on a windows machine, but the client can run any operating system.

if the app is for personal use, then a browser based solution might be overkill.
