Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Print personal checks

    Hi All

I have a need to print my personal checks, one at a time. I do this now with Microsoft word. I thought it would be easier with alpha 5 since most checks I write are repeated month to month. my problem is My checks are 2-1/2" high x 6" wide. When I set my report up in portrait layout I can't seem to have it print in landscape format so I can feed the checks in longways and not in the shortway ( it keeps getting stuck that way).
Any thoughts on how to accomplish this??

    thanks

    Re: Print personal checks

I would still do this task in word as a merge. I would look at exporting the fields and place them on the cheque in the right place.

I use this process a lot as it allows for the template to be changed in word at any time reducing any need to be in design mode in alpha. I find people modify documents so often (generally with every new person who sees things differently) that this was the easiest way to implement a robust database

      Thanks

It seems to me it would be far simpler to just use word and not merge 2 programs. I just keep a document for each check I print in word and edit the date and amount each time.

So you are telling me that you cannot print special paper sizes in landscape mode in Alpha 5.

      Thanks

        Re: Print personal checks

Several ways to do that, for instance you could redesign your report and rotate the text 90 degrees. But, can't you simply do that from your printer? i.e. choose landscape instead of portrait?
You could also do this in alpha with printer settings override.

I really don't know how to do that. I haven't seen options to rotate text

I have chose both landscape printing with the printer and also in the report settings. I get a warning that says size mismatch. The graphic shows the printer in landscape mode but the report is still in portrait.

You could also do this in alpha with printer settings override.
If you are referring to the Alpha report writer settings i already did this.

I have enclosed the file . it is not in its finished form so bear with my inadequacy. See if you can run the report in preview.

          Thanks

            Re: Print personal checks

You could rotate the text from the object properties as in the zip file attached. I only rotated the text, you need to adjust the sizes, position, page size etc.

The warning you are getting re: size mismatch most likely has to do with the page dimensions you used.

            I was referring to:
            report.PRINTER_OVERRIDE()

              Thank you

              G. Gabriel

The rotate text solved my problem. Although I still think I should be able to print the report in landscape mode and have it turn the text along with the document.

again thank you for your help.

You could also try creating an envelope with the check information. Envelopes have a built-in choice of printing in different orientations.

Thank you Mr. Wayne I will look into that also. I am not very good at this even though I have dabbled with it for years. mostly during the winter months. There is a lot to learn, it is one thing to get the information into the database, and whole other thing to present it.

                  Thanks again
