Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    One entry changing multiple records

I am using A5 V10.5 with the latest patches downloaded, and have it connected to a MYSQL database.

The MYSQL came with a trial version of Navicat premium, and am still learning the database.

I have created 3 grids that I then nested within each other. 2 of the grids have autoincrement fields as the primary field. And I have been using real world data to test everything.

I only have a limited amount of information in the database so far. (9 total records.) Anyway I opened up the nested grid in a browser, and entered a record, (only one word,) and added a second record, and a third. But for some reason when I enter one record it changes the one or two other record. I have tried editing them back, and another record is changed with the edit.

I tried changing it through Navicat, and it changed without a problem, so it seems to be something with V10.5. Is this a glitch, or is there something I am doing wrong?

Re: One entry changing multiple records

I think I have fixed the problem. But I had to delete the grid, and rebuild it.

When I built another grid that had almost the exact same attributes, it didn't have the same problems as my original grid. So I thought there must be some glitch in the code that V10.5 isn't correcting, and thought if I delete it, and rebuild it, it might work.

Not sure where the glitch came from, but glad it's gone.

      William,
A question about your auto increment field. I have the same database configuration and similar setup situation, a MySql database with a two field table. One field is set as the key with auto increment, from within MySql. When I try to enter a record via an Alpha form, by entering into the second field, the auto increment is not working. I have tried showing the key field on the form, and tried leaving it off. Must auto increment be set in Alpha properties, even if MySql has it set as auto increment.

How and where did you configure your auto increment field.

      Thanks,
      John

Re: One entry changing multiple records

I had trouble with autoincrement when I was trying to use Alpha 5 to set it up, and I think that was my problem.

Then I set up MYSQL directly using Navicat. I changed the field to int, and clicked the autoencrement check box. I then tested it by entering information into a field, using Navicat, and it worked. Then I tried it in Alpha, and it worked there too.

I don't think I set anything up in Alpha, other then refreshing the table ( under Query (AlphaDAO) ) once I changed the field.

And the other problems I had been having, I think turns out to be a foolish mistake on my part. When I started my project, I didn't set up the folder properly.

Never knew the folders were that big a deal.

          A5 v10
I set up the db and some tables using the MySQL command line client. The named connection string finds the db, but the Alpha control panel does not show any tables in the db, but the fields appear when creating the form. In what folder did you put the db? Did you base your querry upon a table or sql statement.

          Thanks,

I think it should show at least one linked table in the tables/Sets tab, and would think you would have trouble creating forms otherwise.

But remember I am still a newbie to all of this.

I know you want to create the a5 project in the A5webroot folder. A5 should have no trouble finding a MYSQL database, as long as the host name, user name, and password are correct.

I know if you click help, then click on the link to the start up vids, the 5th one is about linking to SQL back end databases. (About halfway into the vid before he actually gets to SQL.)
