Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Incomplete Expression

    What's wrong with this expression? The goal is to show a total for all records with the same FpiNumber. However, it's an incomplete expression.

    tablesum("t_income","T_Income->Fpinumber = " +quote(Fpinumber.value),"T_Income->Payamount")

    Thanks for taking a look.

    Ken

    Try changing quote() to s_quote(). S_quote seems to handle variables better.

    Just a thought

    Tom Baker

    Edit: Another thing I would do is to convert the field value to a variable and then use the variable in the s_quote() function.

    Code:
    dim v_pin as n  (or c )
    v_pin=parentform:fpinnumber.value
    then use the variable v_pin in the s_quote() function

    Code:
    tablesum("t_income","T_Income->Fpinumber = " +s_quote(v_pin),"T_Income->Payamount")

      Hi Tom,

      s_quote doesn't work. Where do I place the code?

      Thanks,

        Re: Incomplete Expression

        Change it to...

        tablesum("t_income","T_Income->Fpinumber = '" + Fpnumber.value + "'","T_Income->Payamount")

        That should do it

          David,

          Thanks for the suggestion. I edited the code with your suggested changes and copied the entire code and pasted. Still getting an incomplete expression.

            I hope I didn't type it wrong... here's mine...

            Where's Fpnumber.value coming from?

            I used F8 in the expression building to get the right syntax... mine coming from a form.

              It's coming from the child table which contains the records. How does F8 give you the syntax? F8 shows property values, at least it always has for me. F2 shows the fields.

                I solved the problem by dragging the Payamount field onto the form and selecting the Total option.

                  Kenn, I'm glad you came up with a solution. I'm curious, though, might the field Fpinnumber be datatyped as numeric?

                    Re: Incomplete Expression

                    But the expression builder doesn't really seem to care about the type.

                    While building

                    tablesum("t_income","T_Income->Fpinumber = " +quote(Fpinumber.value),"T_Income->Payamount")

                    I would change the expression to...

                    "T_Income->Fpinumber = " + 1

                    or

                    "T_Income->Fpinumber = " + "1"

                    and got a good result.

                      Both show Result = 0, Type = N in the expression builder. On the form, it is $0.

                      That cause me to ask, what is the difference between the expression builder showing 0 vs the actual amount? If 0 is an error, and it is, where is the error in the calculation? By not showing the expression error message, one assumes that the result of 0 is valid. Obviously, it isn't.

                      Thanks for the interest.

                        Ken, not sure if this will make any difference, but I would try

                        tablesum("t_income","Fpinumber=" +s_quote(Fpinumber.value),"Payamount")

                          In the attached sample the following work...

                          tablesum("t_income","t_income->Fpinumber = "+s_quote(Fpinumber.value),"T_Income->Payamount")

                          tablesum("t_income","t_income->Fpinumber = "+Fpinumber.value,"T_Income->Payamount")

                          tablesum("t_income","t_income->Fpinumber = "+Fpinumber,"T_Income->Payamount")

                          The expression is from a form... feeding a calculated field, with both fields present on the form

                          Where is your expression set up?
