Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Overlapping Dates Question

I have a start date and an end date field to record an event, if I enter another event that overlaps a already entered event I would like a message to appear advising me that there is a clash of dates, or indeed something that would prevent the second event from being accepted, or both.

    Example :
    Event 1 - Start Date 14-09-2010 , End Date 20-09-2010
    then I enter
    Event 2 - Start Date 18-09-2010 , End Date 28-09-2010

Dates overlap and event 2 is not possible.

However I work with several units, each with their own ID No. and have to ensure that I am checking the dates against the chooen ID. No. as the second event may not clash with another unit and therefore be accepted.

Any help with this would be appreciated

    Re: Overlapping Dates Question

Does each event have a unit specified? if so, check for the unit and then check to see if the start date of event2 is between start and end of event 1.

    Pseudo code:
    Code:
    if(event1.unit = event2.unit .and. between(event2.start,event1.start, event1.end),"Display a message and get out","continue")

I have attached a jpeg of the set structure showing how the dates are linked, hopefully this will give you all a better idea of the direction I should take to reach my objective.

        Many Thanks

          Re: Overlapping Dates Question

          Bill,

I'm not trying to be critical, but that set seems quite large.

I'll go out on a limb here, and presume you are trying to NOT rent out the same villa to 2 separate parties at the same time.

You want to notify the renter(?) when they enter a start and end date that the villa is already rented for that period? I would think you would need to check through all the "booked" records for the specific villa and test that the start date isn't between the already booked start and end dates. This is not a big deal with x-basic, as long as each "booked" reservation is a separate record, but I don't know your level of knowlege with x-basic. It could be placed into an "on_depart" event of the form where the info is being entered.

Is HOLIDAYDATES the table where you are keeping the start and end dates? If so, how do you determine from that table what villa you are looking at? I would recommend putting the villa-id into that table so you can easily check for the netered dates.

            Re: Overlapping Dates Question

The set is rather large but it has been running with no problems for quite a while now and I do not have the knowlege to attempt breaking it down, also I am not up on x-basic enough to write a script for my needs so I guess I will have to make do with doing a manual check on the dates from the attached report.

Again many thanks for your help.
