Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Latest stable version?

It has been a while since I've updated patches (running build 2972-3566) and I see there are numerous patches since then. I have previously had issues after installing an update and am gun shy ...

Using only the desktop version for now .. wondering if others have updated and if so to what build and have you encountered any issues with that build?

IOW; can you tell me what the latest stable release is in regard to building desktop db's?

    Thank you!

I have learned that Alpha will develop their software continuously. I have now accepted that. So the best version is always the newest version.

If you are now starting a new project I would use the latest one.
I would recommend you to update all the time your are developing. Check very carefully release notes and CHANGE your code if something has changed. Go all the time with LATEST releases.

I understand that the quick releases of builds confuses the developer but I have found that it is just so nice to get some error solved immediately.

Alpha has the right way. Follow that.

      Re: Latest stable version?

      Betty,

      I respectfully disagree with Ken.

I can't tell you how many times over the years that I've spent countless hours troubleshooting a problem, only to discover that the patch I applied a week or two ago was the cause.

I'm not ragging on Alpha, not even a little. I love the fact that patches come fast and furious. It is unheard of in the software world to submit a problem and have the CEO of the company send you a fix at 1:00 in the morning, but with Alpha, I have personally had this happen.

Unfortunately, sometimes a patch or new release will also contain new bugs that won't be discovered until some unsuspecting developer stumbles across them.

The product is great and in my opinion can't be touched by it's competitors, but I have learned to apply patches very sparingly and then test, test, test before moving forward.

I totally agree with Louis. I have been through rough times since build 3585 upwards. Almost all updates have been buggy.

But I also found out a trick to solve the question when to update !! Normally, if there is a bug, and a serious one, a new patch is released in 4 /5 days (see release notes and the dates). The golden rules are:

        1. Never update a new patch immediately. (Would not help though if all start to do this as no one will discover a new bug).

        2. If a no new patch has been released for 2/3 weeks for the reason of bugs, this patch should (hopefully) be safe to update.

        3. There is no thing like 'this is the last bug' in software industry....

        All the best.

        CJ

I think you have exactly same opinion as I have. Test and go to the new one. Where is the disagree?

            Re: Latest stable version?

I am still using the last patch (2814-3539) for V10 before the original V10.5 patch because none of the V10.5 patches let some of my forms work as they should. I believe most of the V10.5 patches lean more to the web side, instead of to the desktop side.

              Re: Latest stable version?

I never know what the best approach is. One attack is to sit out a patch for a few days at least to see if anyone (or several people) are having one or more problems. If everything seems quite, go for it. The problem is that the software has so many features, something obscure may have been broken and you don't find out until later. I don't know of any easy answer for that. I have had to go back to earlier patches on any number of occasions because something got broke. It's a double-edge sword since a new patch typically gives us both bug fixes and tempting new features. I guess the old rule is, don't fix it if it ain't broken - and I'm referring to the developer's work. IOWs, if you don't need the new features, and everything is working for you, why patch? Advice I never seem to follow myself.

                Re: Latest stable version?

Okay .. thanks guys. In the Progress world that I come from for the past 20 years (or whatever) ..working with the Syteline or QAD ERP application that is cross platform....

We choose a version that we are going to upgrade to .. generally because we need or want some new functionality in that version and then start testing ..

My experience has been about 2 years for a go-live. I'm working on one (Syteline ERP) upgrading from v4 to v6 from Progress v8 to v10 .. since November 2009 with projected go-live in January 2011 .. and I think that's going to get pushed out.

So yeah .. I'll stick with what I know.

Thanks again for your expert opinions.

                      Re: Latest stable version?

Ditto, V10 2814. although it has a bug concerning cascade changes and deletes not deleting child records which is fixed in the next V10.5 patches, the latest patches causes me too much of a headache with some forms I have in use, which I haven't found a suitable workaround for, to start using them.
