Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Internal Error 3020

    Hello

For some reason when I go to print a report from A5V10.5 I get the following:

    Internal error 3020
    Cardsystem perameter not found.

The report then prints but some items are missing.

The report has worked fine for a number of years.

The only update applied to the system has been A5 V10 to V10.5

I've gone into the report, saved it and get no error mesaage.

This only occurs when I print.

Can anyone help direct me to fixing it as the only workaround I've got is to print the report to a PDF and then print the PDF.

    Many thanks

    Alex,
Is there a more current version of your printer driver available ?
Can you try it to a different printer ?

      Re: Internal Error 3020

      John

I never considered the printer driver because A5V10.5 works as it should with other reports within the application.

Intrigued by the printer printing the page and group header but not the detail, group and page footers, I started removing fields from the detail section.

One was a memo field. Through a process of excluding other fields I discovered that the problem was down to a memo field.

Leave it on the report and the printing error occurred.
Exclude it and the report printed fine.

I went back to the table design, changed the memo field to a 255 character, inserted it on the report, and everything worked fine.

This application has been running since A5V4.5 and has had no issues.

      Despite having been ported to V5, V6, V7 V8 V9 and V10.

      It is fixed now.

      Many thanks for your input.

          Re: Internal Error 3020

          Hi Martin
I'm not saying that memo field printing doesn't work in V10 or 10.5.

What I am saying is that the report stopped working as it had been for many years and across multiple versions of Alpha.

Through a process of elimination I narrowed it down to the memo field appearing on the report.

Leave it on and it doesn't work.
Take it off and the report works as designed.

Now there are two issues here.
1: I solved the problem and I was lucky that my application didn't need a memo field. Secondly that I could get by with a 255character. Finally that it was an internal application so user grief was minimized.

2: Memo fields do work. After all I had run the application quite happily since 4.5.

Not during V5. 6 7 8 9 did this problem rear its ugly head.

But somewhere in the last few months something has changed and that something was upgrading from V9 to 10 and then to 10.5.

Now we have recently upgraded some V5 & V7 clients to V10 and without exception we have met with anomalies. A button on a form not working, a report not filtering correctly, some Xbasic code that ran for years and as it should would throw up a script error.

Recreate the offending item and the problem disappears.

No one is blaming Alpha. As experienced Alpha developers we know and expect that things will and do go wrong. Perhaps Alpha could be a little bit less enthusiastic in their sales language or at least temper it for different customer types; but they are no different from the rest of the IT industry.

My own thoughts are that anyone who believes that any software upgrade is going to be without issues is naive and should not be entrusted with the tool in the first place. Ask any one working with accounting software for a more colourful response!

Now as you know I have another thread regarding the dependability of memo fields.

The last thing I wanted, or needed, is an issue with memo fields. Especially with my techie who tomorrow , is going to turn around and say "I told you so"

I have proof that memo fields do work.

Its their life expectancy and the consequences of their demise that worries me.

          Kind regards

          Alex

I agree - you are sooooooooooo totally right on - there are always issues when moving from one version to another, and sometimes when upgrading from one build to another!

If you no longer need memos - great. I avoid when possible.

              Hi Martin

What alternatives do you use when you need a field that needs more than 255 characters?

              Kind regards

                Re: Internal Error 3020

I use either plain memos or RTF memos. But I have a very good routine in place .
                1. I keep memos in a separate table
                2. I create a memo with one blank space when the parent is created (I only have one memo 1 to 1 for each parent)
                3. I force the user to always edit the memo in its respective editor
                4. I keep a back up copy of evey individual memo in a separate text file, in a subfolder. I got the idea originally from Selwyn about five years ago.
                5. I have routines (functions) that will recreate all the memo records if the file ever becomes corrupted and/or unrecoverable - I zap the table and recreate it from the back up text files.
So far, knock on wood 33 times, I have never had any memo field for any client become corrupted.

I have worked out routines for HTML memos, but so far no clients have them.
