Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Grid Component

I currently use 10.5 and have an application that I created back with v3 and have updated it thru 10.5. I was looking at the Grid Componet for the desktop and it has some features that I have always wanted to do, but couldn't. My question is: Do I have to buy all those other add-ons to make it work. I will not be using excel in this appl, but do I need to get any of the
add-ons. I will not be making web applications, just a desktop.

    thanks

    Re: Grid Component

    Jerry,

    I hope this helps.....

According to the Alpha employee I corresponded with you only need to buy a Feature Pack for each developer license you own not Runtime licenses. So for example if you have 3 developer licenses and would like to use the grid component you would need to purchase 3 Grid Component feature packs.

I beleive this is what you are looking for and a link to purchase is at the top of the page.

      Re: Grid Component

I have purchased/downloaded the Grid Component for desktop applications. I am confused now. Do I have to go into web app mode to build one or can I do this directly in a desktop app. When I following the instructions. Open Form Tool Box, Select SuperControl Tool, draw area on form, Insert Supercontrol dialog opens, select embedded Grid Comp, (this opens) and when I get to name of grid or select, it ask for a web built grid? or something like that. I thought this thing could be used just for desktops and have no involvement with web built apps.

Think i can get my refund back. I really would like to use this thing on a desktop app.

      thanks

        Jerry,

I did not purchase the Feature Pack, I had only discussed the licensing issue with them. hopefully someone on the board will know the answer for you.

I guess no one has every used the grid for desktops, but anyway, I discovered I have to go to the web projects and build one, then it can be used on the desktop app. Just have to do a lot of studying as there are hundreds of things in there when creating one.

I've used the grid component and did not need to buy feature packs for each instance...only the developer instance. I use it on about 10 runtime machines.

Absolutely not. A grid is a grid. You create the grid in the web controlpanel. Then use the desktop grid addon (which you have already purchased) to insert it in your desktop app.

                Re: Grid Component

OK, got all my questions answered. Figured out how to us the grid on a desktop. I have one installed on a form. I am using one to search for an odometer reading that is wrong. From the search I can find it easily, but when I correct the odometer on the grid it does not update the .dbf file. However on the preview and working preview it works perfectly. What has happened between the design of the grid and the actual working copy on my form? (The search criteria is Vehicle # plus the Odometer reading)

Also, when I get this working correctly and want to pass on the new form with the embeded grid is it going to work on their machine since they don't have the grid component installed?

                thanks

                  Hi Jerry,

is it going to work on their machine
What is on their machine, full version or Runtime?

Not sure at the moment how to deploy feature addon into runtime application after installation. The other side of the question then is this, if feature pack is installed on my machine with full developer, will it be available in the runtime application when I use the Create Install Package?
                  Regards

                    Thanks Keith

I have the full version, plus the RT. I am going to move the form to another machine that has only the RT just to see if it works. If that doesn't work then I will create an install package to see if it picks it up.

                      Jerry,

The way I understand it......Feature Packs are installed with the Runtimes and they will work when you have enabled one of them within your developer license.

                        thanks Keith & Scott, but

my main question was why it works in preview and working preview and not as installed on my form. see above

Make sure the runtime is the same as the developer release. Once you place the grid using a super control on the form, it is available from the runtime provided the runtime is on the correct version as the feature packs were incrementally released and not included in the initial 10.x release.

                              Re: Grid Component

Omar, I have two computers I do my design work on.One at work and my laptop at home. Anytime I design at work,I zip up the folder and and unzip it on my laptop, but when I open the file/grid it can't find the grid so I have to go into design mode and resest the grid (this is where you pick the grid by name) and it works fine. When I think of something that is embedded to me that means it's embedded into the system and the source of the actual gird I designed stays behind. Just like an image (picture)If it's embedded then I don't need to send the image itself as an attachment. So if I create an install package does it pick up the grid and it will be installed on my clients computer to be used with the RT program or do I need to include the a5web component with the install program. (The build numbers will not be an issue). I,m confused. The one (grid) I built works great and does exactly what I want done, but had to do it thru trial and error, but still don't understand alot about it.

                              thanks
