Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Unhandled Exception..........

I have a database with 29 forms, some built on sets and some on tables. When right clicking on the form names in the control panel, I select Preview to see a preview of the form and get Unhandled Exception error on all but a few. Close A5, reopen and a database compact has no effect.

Any ideas why this is occurring other than the tables are corrupted?

    Thanks,

    Re: Unhandled Exception..........

    Hi Kenn,

Sounds like a quiz. so let me try.

Do you define (e.g. oninit)events on all of your forms?
Has it something to do then with a variable of which you changed the name or removed the Dim statement?

Kenn you use the default form/browse?
    Is Alpha sport working correct?

What's in the autoexec working correct?
Did you change the name of the table in which you 'save' the names, type and values if you set up vars in a script started by the autoexec.

Did you download the correct version of the last patch? full/runtime.
Forgot to pay for Alpha Five?

What happened since last time was okay? Did you changed the drive/directory, new computer? used regedit?

      Hi Ton,

Nice try, no cigar. Go to your control panel and click the forms tab. Right click on any form and select Preview, should be the third from the top. What to you get/see?

        Re: Unhandled Exception..........

I can make one of my applications show unhandled exceptions if I preview the form (something I would do very rarely).

It is fine with a straightforward form but the exception appears if the form is based on a set and contains an embedded browse.

        Don't know why although.

          Getting the same error here.

I thought it was if the form was based on a set... but that's not it.

It may be that the form contains an embedded browse.

The more "simple" forms, with just buttons, fields, etc. preview ok.

The forms with embedded browses generate an error.

Why do you want to preview them? I've never used that. Are you printing? The forms that do preview do so in a way that doesn't seem useful... repeating data fields.

I've never used it either and have no need to use it. quite frankly, I don't understand why it's even there. There really is no need for it.

That said, the bigger issue is:

            1. I previewed several and then tried to compact the database. Every table which had a form I previewed, would not compact. I not only had to exit A5 but had to reboot my machine in order to clear out A5. There are numerous other items in A5 that exist but have no value. One example is the field properties when a field is used in a report; it contains the Tab Order. While it appears to be harmful, it's certainly not needed. My guess is the reason it's there is because it's the same field properties for the field when used on a form.

            2. Why does the error occur? Does the fact that there is something wrong in this process have an impact on the rest of A5? IOW, does the bad code cause other problems?

            3. Superfluous items should be removed. The more of them there are, the more a chance for problems which translates into headaches, headaches and more headaches for users.
