The Alpha Software Forum Participation Guidelines

The Alpha Software Forum is a free forum created for Alpha Software Developer Community to ask for help, exchange ideas, and share solutions. Alpha Software strives to create an environment where all members of the community can feel safe to participate. In order to ensure the Alpha Software Forum is a place where all feel welcome, forum participants are expected to behave as follows:
  • Be professional in your conduct
  • Be kind to others
  • Be constructive when giving feedback
  • Be open to new ideas and suggestions
  • Stay on topic


Be sure all comments and threads you post are respectful. Posts that contain any of the following content will be considered a violation of your agreement as a member of the Alpha Software Forum Community and will be moderated:
  • Spam.
  • Vulgar language.
  • Quotes from private conversations without permission, including pricing and other sales related discussions.
  • Personal attacks, insults, or subtle put-downs.
  • Harassment, bullying, threatening, mocking, shaming, or deriding anyone.
  • Sexist, racist, homophobic, transphobic, ableist, or otherwise discriminatory jokes and language.
  • Sexually explicit or violent material, links, or language.
  • Pirated, hacked, or copyright-infringing material.
  • Encouraging of others to engage in the above behaviors.


If a thread or post is found to contain any of the content outlined above, a moderator may choose to take one of the following actions:
  • Remove the Post or Thread - the content is removed from the forum.
  • Place the User in Moderation - all posts and new threads must be approved by a moderator before they are posted.
  • Temporarily Ban the User - user is banned from forum for a period of time.
  • Permanently Ban the User - user is permanently banned from the forum.


Moderators may also rename posts and threads if they are too generic or do not property reflect the content.

Moderators may move threads if they have been posted in the incorrect forum.

Threads/Posts questioning specific moderator decisions or actions (such as "why was a user banned?") are not allowed and will be removed.

The owners of Alpha Software Corporation (Forum Owner) reserve the right to remove, edit, move, or close any thread for any reason; or ban any forum member without notice, reason, or explanation.

Community members are encouraged to click the "Report Post" icon in the lower left of a given post if they feel the post is in violation of the rules. This will alert the Moderators to take a look.

Alpha Software Corporation may amend the guidelines from time to time and may also vary the procedures it sets out where appropriate in a particular case. Your agreement to comply with the guidelines will be deemed agreement to any changes to it.



Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Letter, Simple List

    I have created a simple list and in the form I have it displayed as radio options....it all works.

    Now I need to create a letter which needs to include the simple list data and the selected option. Every time I drop the record data field, it only displays the selected option. I need something like this displayed:

    __ Red, __ Yellow, _x_ Brown, __ Black

    Where the red, yellow, brown, and black are my simple list values and brown is ID'd as the select value.

    I have looked for an answer, but unsuccessful. Is there a way to do this?

    How about trying a Conditional Object. I always forget how they work until I create one again. They're like visible/invisible tab layers that show, or not, depending on a condition or expression. Create the layers in the control, and then to get to each layer right click on the control and select one of the displayed layers.

    Attached is a demo db with a form, frmRadio, and a report, rptRadioConditional that show how it works.

    You can put anything you want in each layer.

      Looks like you are applying to a report. Am I able to do the same thing for a letter? To create an expression to list all the items in a simple list?

      I was hoping there was an option (or variable switch) to display all the items in a simple list and identifying the selected one. And another option to only display the selected item.

      I'll take a look at it tonight....

        ok... could not wait until tonight...I think I see what you are doing in the report. I quickly created a letter to do the same but with no success. Maybe missed a step?

        OR Maybe I am not clear on the difference between a report and a letter.

        Here is what I need to have and maybe someone can tell me if a report or a letter is the best way to go.

        I have a user enter information using Alpha 5 forms, for installation of new siding. When completed, I need the information printed, which includes a welcome letter and a contract. The contract would display there selections, where some of the record fields have a simple list and those items in the list need to be displayed along with with select item.

        What is best suited to create the welcome letter and contract? report or a list?

          Yes... works in a letter too. I just copied the conditional object from the report and pasted it into a letter... works exactly the same way. Look at the sample and also read the help section on conditional objects... they're a bit odd until you realize how it works.

          In the sample db the coniditional object has 4 different layers. Right click on the object to see the layers labelled Red, Yellow, Brown and Black. Click on one of those labels to see that specific layer. You'll see, clicking on the labels how each object layer is different.

            I'll give it a try tonight.

            Is there a way for the application pull the simple list items without creating a condition? Or create a condition which is able to pull the simple list items?

            It seem like if a value is going to be added or changed, one needs to update the condition values.

              I am hesitant to jump into this, but...why wouldn't it work just as well to copy and paste what you have on your form into a report (or letter, as for this item it does not matter)?

              I took David's form and changed the field 1 object properties so it looks like the image below, added a label for it and then simply copied and pasted the the 2 objects into a report. Note that I changed the radio button look to be diamonds and increased the font to 12 and put in a few spaces to separate things a bit. No conditionals needed at all as long as you field 1 is numeric (as a text field it won't work). Of course you may not like the look of it, but to me it looks just as good as what you say you want and it is a lot simpler to work with in a report or letter.

              BTW, you can do any and all of what you are talking about in either a letter or a report, though for what you seem to want I'd probably do it in a report. Note that whatever you can do in a letter can also be done in report--it just may be a bit more work. Reports also have some advantages like OnPrint events (which usually aren't relevant to letters).

                Why hesitant?

                It never occurred to me to copy the radio button group into the report... 'cause the radio control is not in the Reports Toolbox. That's what I looked for first. So... why isn't it? Specially since it works. That's certainly the best solution... thanks Raymond.

                  A couple of not very good reasons: First, I have a suspicion that Mark really wants the "X" (and thus I would be wasting my time with my contribution), and second I suspect Mark is quite new to A5 and thus this thread may balloon into other issues that I don't have time to be involved in (but might feel obligated given I put in an initial 2 cents). Plus I am trying hard to be retired and my wife doesn't like to see me spending time with this kind of thing!

                    Too funny! I haven't heard of anyone working hard at being retired.

                    Anyway, glad you jumped in because I'll now expand my thinking to include wierd stuff like copying controls from one object to another even though they're not available in the target object.

                      Thanks Guys...I can see using both solutions in different situations. It is interesting how the conditions work. I can see that being useful.

                      And so it looks like using the simple list would not be the way to go if you are looking to keep the database small.

                      Raymond...the x was the selection of a radio button.

                        Hmm, I don't think an X is an option for radio buttons. If it is, I guess I am just way behind the latest and greatest and thus ought to be even more hesitant to jump into these things. Or maybe (more likely) I'm just misunderstanding what you mean by "the x was the selection of a radio button." No matter, I'm done!
