Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Variables for Custom Install

I searched and can't find what I need. I want a form to gather information (runtime application) from the end user. Company Name / address / etc... so this information can be used as a header on other forms / report titles / etc... This would make a really professional looking program.

    Thank You

    Re: Variables for Custom Install

You design a table with fields to hold the information you want to use. You populate the table with defaults/original values to be used until the end user enters their won values.

You design a form to allow the end user to edit the defaults but not enter any new records.

When the application starts your autoexec script reads the table and populates global variables with the field values from the table.

Your "header on other forms / report titles / etc" references these global variables.

    See this.

Stan, I like your ideal better than what I currently use. The form (attached) I us the lookup system to add what fields I want to print on reports. Could you give an example of a Autoexec using the fields as variables. The attached form is something I created way back in ver 4 and it's never changed. I know how to use and attach variables to reports, forms, etc, but other than xdialog I ain't to good at writing xbasic.

Bty, You probably have already answered this question, but where have you been? I haven't seen you on the forum for quite some time, anyway, welcome back, missed your knowledge of Alpha.

        Jerry,

There's an example autoexec and better explanation of the process on the learn alpha.com site accessible through my See this link.

        As to where I've been.....

I stepped back for a while because I felt truly Alphaholic insofar as the message board is concerned. Just needed some perspective and went "on the wagon", "cold turkey" so to speak.

Stan, showed you a good one.

This way if you use the same application in two differend locations and the addresses or whatever are different at each location, you just enter the correct information in the table, to use on your forms, reports, etc.
          Just use the variables.

Don't forget to poke around and see what else you can learn (pun intended) at www.learn alpha.com (Articles). You never know when it might come in handy. If you don't use what you find you might be able to point it out to someone else.

Thanks, yet again, to Peter Wayne.

                  Re: Variables for Custom Install

I discovered how to do this myself and have been calling my global_vars_make() from autoexec for a long time (pic). I guess I need to poke around more in those articles and stop spending time reinventing the wheel!
