Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Fax Cover Page Editor causes crash

In version 3040-3571 if I preview a report, then select File - Fax - the Microsoft Fax service fax dialog comes up. Cover pages are not shown in the combo box. When I click edit cover page I get an unhandled exception.

In version 3616-3623. The dialog is different but if I click on the edit cover page it crashes silently.

    OS is Windows 7-64

Can someone confirm this behavior before I submit it as a bug.

    Thanks,
    Russ

This doesn't work in Windows 7 32 bit either. I suspect that the problem is that Alpha expects cover pages to be in the program directory, which is a nono in Win 7. Windows expects them to be in users\mydocs\fax.

Is there a way to change the default cover page path in A5?

If anyone is interested, here is Selwyn's reply on this and the correct paths to use.
Once the correct paths are in and file associations correct it works correctly. Not sure why I was getting the crash, it was repeatable but now is fine.
"I took a look at the code. Alpha Five is just calling into Microsoft Fax Service. So, if there is a problem, it is likely with Microsoft Fax Service.

I could not duplicate the problem you were having - perhaps because I don't have a fax modem installed. But I did not get any crashes.

The problem is not that we are looking for the cover page in the program folder. On my machine, there is where we we looking for the cover page.

      "C:\Users\Selwyn.ALPHASOFTWARE\AppData\Roaming\Alpha Software\Alpha Five Version 10\CoverPages\CoverPage.cov"

when you click the 'edit cover page' button, we are simply doing a
sys_open(fn) - where fn is the filename of the cover page.

that means that a5 will ask the operating system to open the page using the associated application. in my case there was no application associated with .cov files, and so nothing happened.

you could try to find the folder where .cov files are on your machine, open the folder in windows explorer and right click on a .cov file and select Open.

My guess is that it won't open on your machine either - which means that the problem is not an A5 problem.

My suggestion would be to use a service that allows you to email a pdf file and they will then send it out as a fax. There should be lots of these services on the internet now."
This is the path for the Win 7 Fax and scan app.
      %windir%\system32\WFS.exe

This is the path for the Win 7 cover page editor
      %systemroot%\system32\fxscover.exe
