Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Making sense of Fetch_Last

    Hello

I am trying to make sense of the <tbl>.fetch_last usage the help doesn't do much for me I have searched and find no one using it on the forums

I have a simple tables "clients" and "calls" when I bring up the "clients" form with an embedded browse from "calls" in it I want see the last time called in a field from the table not wanting to scroll to the bottom of the browse I have used goto last record is not the answer but works sort of

    thanks Greg

    Re: Making sense of Fetch_Last

<tbl>.fetch_last doesn't apply to what you want.

Code the onfetch event for your form.

    Code is

    browseobjectname.fetch_last()

Where browseobjectname is the object name of the browse on the form. (Usually browse1 but not necessarily.)

It wouldn't hurt to put the same code on the onactivate event to ensure the same behavior when the form is first opened and when it reacquires focus.

        Hope it helps.

Not sure what you mean by "I have searched and find no one using it on the forums".

        I get 282 hits when I search for .fetch_last().

Not all are pertinent but some are.

Another way which many use is to invert the sort of the field to be descending--that way the last date/time is shown at the top of the browse.

                Re: Making sense of Fetch_Last

sorting can be done with code, form properties (which includes an embedded browse), and within the set linkage itself.....where do you want to set it and we can guide you how to do it.

                  Thanks Mike

I am pretty good with network setup and database but just learning Alpha code I have been using Clarion for about 8 years and the code is quite different

used a little piece of code to get it to work in the form but need to lock the embedded browse down or it changes the outcome when clicked on How would I know to search the help on <object>.fetch_last It would help to get rid of the carrots and put it in a working example Clarion has pretty good documentation that way

I can't find the spot to get it to work in the set tried the descending record method didn't seem to work or I missed something

Anyway thanks again for your help and tips I will get on to it sooner or later as I have a few desktop apps to build

                  Greg

Start searching with the least text you think is feasible.

                    .fetch_last

for instance, will return more hits and present you with more information.

Don't worry about the <object> or <table>, find the fetch methods first and you will see where they can be used.

                      Thanks Stan

I guess I should have known about the period

Start searching with the least text you think is feasible.

                      .fetch_last

As I have stated I have always used Clarion and the documentation is pretty clear no guessing if the side carrots are needed etc

and <object>.fetch_last is a little vague table form browse field row and on and on
you helped by showing what I really needed to put in the code browseobjectname.fetch_last()
browse1.fetch_last() was the answer no side carrots It is about like trying to figure out
long ago the Microsoft help "HostHeaderName" how about www.company.com = host header name
I see a lot of questions on the Alpha forums about server setups and many things I feel are really simple and they don't get answered I am aware not all are Alpha related BUT are caused
by trying to simply run Alpha on a Windows platform
Try breaking IIS free from port 443 for Alpha to run on simple for me

                      thanks again
