Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Using a startup file when using A5.load()

    I know how to set the windows title using a startup file and the -INCLUDE option in the command line when starting an Alpha application from scratch but there does not seem to be a way to do this when using A5.Load to start one application from another.
    Essentially we have a menu programme that contains a number of records in a single table - each of which has a field containing the path to another Alpha application. We then use a browse with a button which places the path of the desired application in a variable (appvar)and then required app is opened using a5.load(appvar). However we want each application to open with specific title in the Window Bar at the top of the screen so if the app is minimised it is quite clear which app is open.
    There does not seem to be a way to either have -INCLUDE or -TITLE="My APP" work with A5.load().
    Have also tried putting A5.window_title = "My App" in the OnActivate and / or Oninit events of the main application screen with zero success.
    Can anybody help ?

    Bob,

    The only way I know is instead of using A5.load point directly to a ready made shortcut.
    e.g.
    filename="c:\Datamove\appstaff\staff planner"
    sys_open(filename)

      Re: Using a startup file when using A5.load()

      Bob,

      I did a trial withe sys_open see below

      dim myvar as C
      myvar = "C:\data\myrun.bat"

      sys_open(myvar)
      a5.close()
      I had to create a bat file with the command line. It would not work properly until the include line only referenced the root directory of the exe file.

      So the above uses sysopen to open a Db and then closes the original adb

        Re: Using a startup file when using A5.load()

        Bob,

        We do something fairly similar to what you do with a main menu app that "calls" other apps. It may be a little tedious, but in the "on-activate" of the forms in the "called" app, put an

        a5.window_title = <your application name>

        if you set a global variable to be your app name, then change it to

        a5.window_title = Var->appname

        and it will appear on all the windows as a title.

        example of "Calling a Sub Application"

        Code:
        'FUNCTION "SETUP" INITIALIZES THE VARIABLES TO BE SENT TO THE CALLED APPLICATION.
        '	THE CHARACTER PARAMETERS ARE THE NAMES OF THE CALLED APPLICATION AND THE FORM
        '	WE ARE COMING FROM. THEY ARE PLACED INTO THE AA.BCBSS.WHERETO AND AA.BCBSS.WHEREFROM
        '	SUPER-GLOBAL VARIABLES

          Re: Using a startup file when using A5.load()

          Bob,

          I have just completed a multi-db application following Tom's method.

          The only difference is that I have a line in the autoexec of each individual app and it works perfectly.
          This is all I have in an autoexec:

          if a5_check_throttle_file() = .f. then
          a5.close()
          end if
          make_global_vars()
          A5.window_title = "S I T A Fahrerschulung"
