Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Field Rules Only on Specific Form or Browse

I have searched the forums for hours trying to find a solution or option for this and have been coming up blank. I am sure there has to be a way to do this but I cannot come up with anything. I could simply be using the wrong terminology or looking in the wrong places - wouldn't be the first time.

I have a form with an embedded browse to enter records. I have everything on this form is setup and working properly. The table the browse is connected to has a field rule setup to allow the dropdown in the picture.

The problem that I am having is that later down the line I may need to change the Serial Number (Field the lookup is based on) but I do not want it to do the field lookup then.

So what I need to do is either find a way to do a different type of dropdown essentially the same as the field lookup dropdown or I need to find a way to tie the field rules to only work on this form/browse.

Does anyone have any suggestions/recommendations on how to make this work? I hope I have explained everything properly, it is very late and I hope I am explaining everything properly. If I can answer any questions or clarify anything please let me know.

    Thank you!!

If your table field rule lookup allows User can add records to lookup table, wouldn't that solve it?
    There can be only one.

Look into Conditional Lookup in the Field Rules.

The problem with that is that at the point of being receiving things are entered and they can add a record to the table but what happens is that the serial number will be entered wrong and need to be updated. So I need a way to change the field without it trying to do a lookup and changing the additional fields. I know ideally this should not be an issue and they are just entered right but regrettably it does not work that way.

I have looked into the conditional lookup but I would like to keep the dropdown to speed up the process and for ease of the process. Is there a way to do a conditional lookup with a dropdown?

        Thank you!

Not sure but I don't think so. I don't use field rules that much but it seems to me you need to look into field validation before venturing into different options for lookup.

That said, un-check the auto popup for lookup. Don't know if this alone might solve your issue.

New to v10 is 'field rules' at the form level. Right click on the field control in the form and it is the bottom choice. Define the lookup there and remove it from the table's rules. Then create a separate form for editing.

It is allowable to have field rules in both places so you can still leave the ones in the table rules that you want to apply table wide.

On this form you can then have a HUGE message that says 'DO IT RIGHT THE FIRST TIME.' :)

Tim - This looks like exactly what I am looking for. Did not know this was there or that you could do it. Very nice and very impressive.

The only problem comes in is that I am trying to do the entry of the new child records into a embedded browse vs. the form.

So I guess the next question becomes is this possible to do on the browse level? If not then it looks like I need to redesign the form and find a different way to enter the child records. Any good suggestions or ideas how to do this? For this type of data entry I have always used a browse so I am at a loss.

I really wish adding the 'DO IT RIGHT THE FIRST TIME' would work, it would save me a lot of time in coding for when they do it wrong!

              Thanks again for your help.

I think I have found a couple of ways around this. I am going to do some additional testing this evening and tomorrow and will let you know what I have found out.

                Thanks everyone for your help!
